CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Stress has a big factor in human behavior, an overwhelming

feeling or emotional pressure. Big changes, pressure, and worrying

are one of the reasons that cause stress. Coronavirus disease 2019

(Covid-19 Pandemic caused big changes, worry, fear, and concern

among the large population. According to the study conducted by Kim

et. al, (2020) the most vulnerable in psychological harm are the

children and adolescents due to isolation, a departure from usual

activity, separation among friends or family, and the like.

Numerous studies showed that engaging in physical activity

regularly has a big impact on maintaining physical as well as mental

health. Performing Physical Educations Activity has a direct benefit in

reducing stress. It pumps up endorphins, boosts human mood,

reduces the negative effects of stress. Covid-19 Pandemic set

limitations and of it is a social gathering, education is affected in this

limitation. Department of education come up with the solution of

having distance learning, but these big changes cause stress among

students.
The overall purpose of this study is to name the role of physical

education in coping stress of grade 11-HUMMS students of Lagro

High School (LHS) at this time of the pandemic. To name the stressors

of students during this time of pandemic and to define the factors

that affect the students' engagement in physical activity.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to explore the horizon of physical

education as a subject and its role in improving the stress factor

brought by the new normal setup. This study has a goal to enhance

its study by getting feedback regarding this new step up from Grade

11 HUMMS students of LHS. Consequently, as part of the

researchers’ goal, this study will directly benefit the students and the

community by providing awareness and enlightenment on this

current situation. Moreover, this study will serve its importance for

future researchers as it gives an analysis of this specific topic in their

future reference.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine the role of Physical Education

(P.E.) subject and establish a relationship between participation in

P.E. classes and the perceived stress and lifestyle. This research also

shows the importance of P.E. and its benefits to the following:

To students. This study will be an eye-opener to the students

to apply the knowledge in P.E. subject to their current lifestyle that is

crucial for them in managing stress.

To the School. The study will pave a way to prioritize

improving the P.E. curriculum for the effectiveness of the new

learning modality as well as engagement of students.

To the future researchers. The results that will be gathered in

this study will help future researchers to their study related to this

topic as well as to captivate their knowledge about the role of P.E. in

this time of pandemic to managing stressors.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to assess the role of Physical

Education in coping with the stress of selected Grade 11 HUMSS

students of Lagro High School in the New Normal. Specifically, the

research seeks to answer the following:

1. What are the common stressors student experiencing in their

current lifestyle?

2. How Physical Education help students to cope up with stress

in the new normal set-up?

3. How does P.E. efficiently taught on Grade 11 students in

distance learning?

4. How students employ P.E. in their everyday lives to manage

feelings?

5. What are the factors affecting students' engagement in P.E.-

related activities?

Definition of Terms

Physical Education - it aims to develop students' physical competence

and knowledge of movement and safety and their ability to use these

to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the

development of an active and healthy lifestyle.

Stress - is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with

mental or emotional pressure.

New Normal - a current situation, a social custom that is different

from what has been experienced or done before but is expected to

become usual or typical.

Exercise - activity acquiring physical effort and carried out to sustain

or improve health and fitness.

Strong resistance - it is a battle or fights against any phenomena like

COVID 19.
CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Conceptual Framework

Stress and lack of exercise are commonly acknowledged as

modern-day scourges that progressively impact numerous

individuals, regardless of age, education, or career. Thus these

aspects of life have recently been a source of concern and exploration.

In today’s current condition due to the emergence of the Covid-19

outbreak, a recent study by Brooks S. et al. (2020) concluded that

there is significant concern over how the changes in how people

usually engage in everyday activities impact their health and well-

being.

This study focused on determining the role of PE on the

perceived stress and lifestyle and the correlation of imparting PE to

physical activities of selected Grade 11 HUMSS students.

The research paradigm of this study is described as follows.

The results of the Survey Assessment are shown in chapter four (4) in
table forms, whereas the actual sample of the participants’ survey

script will append in Appendix D.

Research Paradigm

The first box on the left side conveys the intervention/treatment

for the participants before conducting an online survey assessment.

The researchers will provide two online sessions of lectures, including

exercises, P.E. lessons, and the everyday stressors in the new set-up

of learning and lifestyle.

The middlebox shows the survey assessment the researchers

will perform. Participants will be provided with a questionnaire using

an online platform after discussing the effects of P.E. in application to

physical-related interventions in coping with stress.

Meanwhile, the third box entails the results of the survey

assessment regarding the perceptions of student-participants to the

role of P.E. in their current lifestyle.

CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

The purpose of the study is to examine the role of Physical

Education (P.E.) in coping with stress among students in this time of

the Covid-19 pandemic. To address this, an online survey will be

used. This chapter contains the methodology of the study that shows

the research design, study area, population, procedures, sample,

research instruments, and the gathered data from the participants.

Research Design

The study will use a descriptive research design to gather

credible information and facts to create a conclusion on how target

student-participants used P.E. to cope up with stress. Adom D. et al.

(2016) cited Honebein (1996), who defines the constructivism as a

philosophical paradigm as an approach that asserts that people

construct their understanding and knowledge of the world through

experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.

These views are integral to the development of a qualitative

study as a properly conducted basic qualitative research design

provides

valuable insight to assist with uncovering the meaning participants

attribute to their experiences, thereby providing a better

understanding of the phenomenon being studied (Merriam & Tisdell,

2016).

The utilization of a basic qualitative research design will allow

the researchers to ask each participant in-depth questions regarding

the role of the P.E. subject in managing stress in the new normal

lifestyle. Through online survey assessment on the selected

respondents of the study, the researchers are expected to explain the

meaning participants created regarding their experiences.

Locale of the Study

The students of Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMMS) strand are the participants, representing the estimated

population of (n=360+) enrolled students in the study. These

participants are students from one of the public schools in Quezon

City for the school year 2020-2021. Given the situation, the
researchers will be using an online survey tool, Google Forms to

gather information from the respondents due to pandemic

constraints.

With this, researchers are hoping that this will deliver profound

feedback concerning the role of physical education in coping with

stress in the new normal. This would benefit the researchers in

arriving at a sensible conclusion.

Population of the Study

The population of this study representing the estimated

population (n=360+) of Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS) strand from a public school consisting of 300 temporarily

enrolled students in the school year 2020-2021.

In the selection of target population, the researchers picked

HUMSS students for the following reasons: (1) the researchers are

part of the HUMSS strand for S.Y. 2020-2021 and; (2) they have easy

access to selecting respondents who will give rich experiences in

managing stress through the application of P.E. subject.

Research Instruments

Using unstructured research instruments, the researchers will

provide online questionnaires that will be prepared to be answered by

the selected Grade 11-HUMSS Students of Lagro High School. This

set of questionnaires are influenced by the research tool included in

related literature and studies of (Cheng-Hu Deng, et al., 2020 online

survey), that are connected to the study. The researcher will use an

unstructured survey questionnaire to gather the exact words of

participants in explaining their answers.

In this mode of collecting data, the selected participants will be

expected to freely determine and elaborate their experiences regarding

the role of P.E. subject in correlation with managing stressors in the

new learning and lifestyle.

Validation of Instrument

Validity in research instrument refers to the degree of accuracy

achieved by the instrument used within a study (Huck, 2008) as cited

in a recent study by Hailey et al., (2018). For validation purposes of

the study, the researcher’s survey questionnaires will be validated by

4 eligible professionals in the field of Arts Education in P.E. and

Psychology. The first expert is a registered Psychometrician,

graduated major in Guidance and Counseling currently working as a

Guidance Counselor in a public secondary school. Another

professional is also an Arts Education graduate that has a doctoral

degree in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in a public university. The third expert is

a skilled public Junior High School (JHS) teacher who graduated in

Psychology and has a certification in teaching P.E. Lastly, the fourth

expert has a master's degree in Human Movement Science and a P.E.

instructor in the Senior High School (SHS) in public secondary school.

Through this, the researchers are expected to produce a valid

research tool for the study.

Ethical Considerations

After getting the approval of the questionnaire, the researchers

will first submit a Letter to Conduct Study to the Faculties and

Teachers of Lagro High School, specifically in SHS. Also, another

consideration to be pondered is the consent of the participant’s

parents and guardians. They will be asked to sign the Informed

Consent Form (ICF) online, which assures the anonymity of the

personal information and responses will be kept. Additionally, the

researchers will give a brief introduction to the student-participants

before exercising the actual survey process. By this, the trust between

the researchers, parents, and respondents is expected to be endorsed.

Data Gathering Procedure

In the process of gathering data, the researchers will conduct

an online survey assessment for the participants.

First, the researchers will accommodate two sessions of

lectures, including exercises, P.E. lessons, and everyday stressors in

this new set up of learning and lifestyle. After the assessment that will

be conducted, the researchers will tabulate the data and analyze it.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The responses of the SHS students to the researchers’

instrument will be properly tabulated with the data requirements of

the study. With this, descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency

distribution, and rank will be employed to interpret the student-

participants subjective answers to the survey questionnaire.

In addition, to identify the demographic profile and the

correlation between the independent and dependent variables, the

Person Product Moment of Correlation will be utilized with a 0.05 level

of significance, and the percentage formula will be considered.
