INTRODUCTION

The basic components of education counselling and prevention system are facilities of educational,

psychological and special pedagogical counselling and prevention.

One may also ask, what are the four components of the ASCA Model? The four basic components of

the ASCA model are foundation (basis for the counseling program), management (organizational work

to implement the counseling program), delivery (services to students), and accountability (the

responsibility of the school counselor).

The basic stages of counseling are: 1) Developing the client/clinician relationship; 2) Clarifying and

assessing the presenting problem or situation; 3) Identifying and setting counseling or treatment

goals; 4) Designing and implementing interventions; and 5) Planning, termination, and follow-up.

Guidance and Counseling Program

The Guidance and Counseling Program at Sangaree Elementary is based on the SC

Comprehensive

Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model and the American School Counselor

Association (ASCA) National Model. Our program components organize the work of school

counselors into activities and services. The four components are as follows:

Guidance Curriculum includes structured experiences presented systematically through

classroom and group activities for all grades. Provides guidance content in a systematic way to

all students PreK-12. Student awareness, skill development and application of skills needed in

everyday life. The purpose is awareness, skill development, and application needed for the

following three development areas:

1. Learning to Live (Personal/Social Development)

2. Learning to Learn (Academic)

3. Learning to Work (Career Development)

Scope of Guidance curriculum

The scope of the Guidance curriculum includes: Motivation to achieve, Decision making, goal

setting, planning and problem solving skills, Self-esteem development, Interpersonal

effectiveness, Communication skills, Cultural diversity, Responsible behavior, Education

planning and Knowledge of postsecondary opportunities

Roles of Counsellor in Guidance Curriculum

1. Structured groups

2. Responsive Services

Responsive Services includes counseling or referral activities to meet the immediate needs and

concerns of students. Responsive services include personal counseling; crisis counseling;

agency referral; consultation with parents, teachers, and other professionals, support groups;

and problem solving. Issues addressed include the following:

• Grief, loss, death

• Family problems/concerns

• Coping skills

• School and classroom conduct

System Support includes indirect guidance management activities that maintain and enhance

the total guidance program. Responsibilities in this component include staff and community

relations, special research projects, committees, professional development, and student

support.
