The Use Of Picture Media To Improve Student’s English Vocabulary. Some opinions regarding the use of
pictures to improve students 'English vocabulary all have a positive opinion that the increase in students'
English vocabulary is more significant using pictures. Pictures are one form of media that is widely used,
pictures are often used in learning various subjects, not only in learning English. Pictures are a medium
to attract students' attention and make them interested in the given subject. This is because the
attitudes, motivation and interests of students are the determining factors for their achievement
(Finocchiaro, 1975: 263). Furthermore, Chayanuvat (1996) states that with words students are less
interested while with pictures students are more interested in learning them. Without a doubt, images
are powerful visual aids. The “pictures” here include everything from postcards, drawings, photographs,
paintings, wallpapers, to slides and videos.The use of pictures is an excellent technique to help students
understand various aspects of a foreign language. The images have motivated students, made the
subject clearer to understand, and illustrated general ideas of object reactions specific to a culture. This
can help develop a variety of other needed skills such as visual discrimination, attention to detail, and
conceptual expansion. According to Andrew Wright (1989, p.2) Image is one of the media that teachers
can use to make it easier for students to understand new words. According to Webster, picture is an
image or likeness of an object, person, scene, reproduced, on flat surface, especially by painting, of
photography; a metal image or impression; an idea. (Webster, 1983:1357)

for example in Fatah's research (2018) on the implementation of the use of images and realia for
third grade students of SDN Karanggondang 01 in the 2018/2019 academic year, this was carried out in
two cycles. Through pictures, students' vocabulary mastery can increase. The results showed that the
increase in students' vocabulary mastery increased after students were taught using pictures and realia.
This can be seen from the comparison of all scores in cycle I and cycle II. The results showed that the
students' vocabulary mastery increased from pre-test to post-test. This means that the use of pictures
and realia can improve students' vocabulary mastery. The use of images and realia in learning
vocabulary can significantly improve vocabulary mastery of class III.64 SDN Karanggondang 01 Academic
Year 2018/2019. The results showed that the average post-test results in cycles I and II were higher than
the mastery score (KKM) of English at SDN Karanggondang 01, because the passing score was 65. So
after using it there was a significant increase.(Fatah,2018). in line with Donal (2012) said that the using
of picture can helpstudents to imagine the situation, things based on the picturegiven. Because of that
the researcher is very interested to applyit to know the influences of pictures in improving
students’vocabulary mastery. This research can strengthen teaching using image media.
