REINFORCING STEEL BAR (RSB)

WORKS ORIENTATION
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To be able to know the rebar works materials, its uses and
specifications
2. To have a general orientation of the uses and importance
of reinforcing steel bars
3. To know how to manage the excess materials at the
working area
4. To know the common abbreviations indicated on the rebar
plans
METAL REINFORCEMENTS
USES Of DEFORMED STEEL BARS
- It is the most widely used reinforcing materials for almost
types of concrete construction

- It is an excellent partner of concrete in resisting both

tension and compression stresses

- Comparatively, steel is ten times stronger than concrete in

resisting compression load and hundred times stronger in
tensile stresses.

- Concrete design assumes that concrete and steel

reinforcement acts together in resisting load and likewise
to be in the state of simultaneous deformation

- Rebars are deformed, otherwise, the steel bars might slip from concrete
in the absence of sufficient bond.

REBAR MARKINGS
TIE WIRE FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT
- Tie wire refers to gauge No. 16 galvanized iron wire
(popularly called G.I. tie wire)

- Tie wire is used to secure the steel bars in its designated

position.

- Ordering of tie wire is not by feet nor by meter length but

in kilograms or roll.
1 roll = 45 kilograms
(approximately 53 meters per kilogram)

- The length of each wire depends upon the size of bars to

be tied on.
REBAR STOCKING AND STORING
STOCKPILING
SITE STORAGE
HOUSEKEEPING AND DISPOSAL

• Sorting of scrap rebars from their lengths and diameter

for proper disposal

• Proper stacking of scrap rebars to be re-used

• Proper used of motor oil and grease for equipments

(lubricants)

• Proper stacking of scrap tie wires for proper disposal

• Bar stacking / stock piling

– Proper placing of bars with regards to their lengths
and diameters to ensure proper use of bars, to ensure
rebars against rust/corrosion, to ensure proper inventory
of bars, etc

(perimeter of the building) where workers safety belt
are anchored during working time (example: beams
installation)

Long Pants And Long sleeves – upper and lower

requirement for individuals to protect their skins due to
direct contact from the heat of the sun

TECHNIQUES AND METHODS

• FABRICATION
 cutting of bars as shown on rebar cutting list, proper
sorting of bars to its lengths and diameters
 bending of bars manually or by equipments to its proper
shape and size of stirrups, lateral ties, etc
 proper tagging of fabricated bars to ensure proper
inventory

• INSTALLATION
 ensure that the area is ready to receive fabricated rsb
such as footings, columns, walls, beams, slabs, etc
 ensure proper layouts for alignments of structures
 follow the corrected and approved rebar cutting list as
guide for bar placement
 interpret plans and specifications before final placement
 proper coordination to other scope of works
(plumbing/electrical/mechanical) for final placement of
their block outs / pipe sleeves
 use only Ga # 16 GI tie wire for tying and banding
