31. Read the case study carefully and answer the questions that follow: [5]
In calculus, the chain rule tells us how to find the derivative of a composite function. Let us
brush up on our knowledge of composite functions, and learn how to apply the chain rule
correctly.
The chain rule says:
d ′ ′
[ f (g(x))] = f ( g(x) ) × g (x)
dx

or If y = f(t) and t = g(x)

dy dy dt
then  = ×
dx dt dx

It tells us how to differentiate composite functions.

What are Composite functions:
A function is composite if we can write it as , I is a function within a function or a function of a
function. Here g is the function within function f. So we call 'g' an inner function and 'f' is an

12 / 22
RP Choudhary Director C_5LearningNagpur 9890415841
outer function.

Common mistakes while differentiating composite functions:

1. Not recognizing whether a function is composite or not. If we don't recognize that a
function is composite and that the chain rule must be applied, we will not be able to
differentiate correctly.
2. Wrong identification of the inner and outer function. Even when we recognized that a
function is composite, we might get the inner and the outer functions wrong. This will
surely end in the wrong derivative.
Now answer the following questions:

i. If  g(x) = x2 + 2 then in y = sin (g(x)), which is the inner function?
