PART 2: Evaluation of compentences
2.1. In the song-lou-lou hydraulic power station are found 8 groups of turbo-alternators. Each
group receives a flow rate of 135.73m3/s with the height of the waterfall of 39.2 m. Each group
is such that its turbine has an efficiency of 93 %. its alternator possesses 24 poles with an
efficiency of 97 % and flows at a frequency of 50 Hz.
a. which type of turbine is suitable for this power plant?
b. compute the rotating speed of each alternator.
c. compute the power of the water fall. take g = 9.8 m/s.
d. what is the power supplied to the grid at full load by the power plant?
e. what will happen if the water flowrate suddenly drops?
f. what will happen if the if a large consumer suddenly gets disconnected from the grid?

2.2. Consider the principle diagram below:

a. Which type of power plant is shown on this diagram?

b. Based on this diagram, explain its working principle.
c. Cite the different types of turbines used in a wind power plant.
d. Give two advantages and two disadvantages of this generating power plant.
e. Is this type of power plant exploited in Cameroon?
f. A wind turbine travels with the speed of 10 m/s and has a blade length of 20 m. Determine
wind power. Air density ρ = 1.23 kg/m.
