Lesson 6: Activity 4

Weighing the Market

Description:

The history of the global market brought positive and negative effects through time. At this point, my kids will be

assessed through your perspective provided that you already had a good grasp after different concepts in

economic and financial globalization. This activity will help you understand the benefits and harms of global

economic processes, structures, technologies.

Instruction:

1. Listed below are the scenarios that have to do with the economy. Discuss the major impacts of these scenarios

whether they are positive or negative (for you, for the country, or for the Filipinos). The “Case-by-Case” column

can be used to justify your answers.

Scenario Positive Negative Case-by-Case

As a granddaughter of a farmer myself, I know this kind of

structural development might help our country to build bonds

with foreign audiences and investors to improve the

economy, I agree with that, and yes it will create job

A ✓
opportunities in our locality. But if our agriculture will be

affected by this expansion, I'm a hundred percent opposed

to it. The Philippines is known for rice plantations and other

crops, not only a lot of farmers will lose their job and
livelihood, but it will also affect our economy and our natural

resources. Food shortage and price increase will surely

occur.

Online shopping is arising especially as pandemics persist.

Since people can't physically go buy and shop for garments,

online shops became our choice of platform. The negative

viewpoint in this case, is purchasing from another country

has a big demand when it comes to taxes, shipping, and

B ✓
transporting. Not just that, ordering from a foreign shop

makes it hard to know if it's trustworthy and has a good

quality. I'm also an active online shopper myself and tried

purchasing internationally, but it's not as easy compared to

buying in your own country.

I don't think it's a bad thing to import rice from our

neighboring countries. It's the best alternative, even though

it will hold up the support from our local farmers, it's still the
C ✓
best decision to sustain our economic stability. Moreover, it'll

be adequate to have international relations in trade and

culture.

It will be a nightmare for the majority. If MNC closed, the rate

of unemployment will increase. MNC help the growth of

globalization which became a huge contributing factor in the

economy and relationship between countries. Many high

D ✓ school and college graduates earn money because of these

big companies. In the Philippines multinational corp. don't

affect the country negatively, in fact, we benefit from it. As

we all know the Philippines is not as competitive as other

countries in global marketing. MNC helps our economic

stability to improve, likewise which brings us money and job

opportunities.

As we all know, since the pandemic started, our global

economy is withering. Businesses are temporarily shutting

down, and other sources of income. All human activities are

E ✓ affected, the circulation of capital, the marketing, and of

course the tourism industry due to the strict implementation

of lockdown. It is unfair but this is also for our safety. This is

also represented in the global financial crisis.

Scenario A: Agriculture is the main source of employment in your home province. The government has

recently decided to develop the farmlands into real estate and exclusive subdivisions in order to attract

foreign investors to the country.

Scenario B: You decided to purchase a new shirt through an online shop based in London.

Scenario C: The Philippine government is being pressured by the current economic crisis to import rice

from Taiwan and other nearby countries in the region.

Scenario D: A multinational corporation decided to close. Unfortunately, your father is one of its many

employees whose work has been terminated. However, he could still be employed if he were to accept

the offer to move or relocate to another country.

Scenario E: The global financial crisis has affected the investment funds of your mother that she can

use for her retiremen

2. How did you decide for each scenario? What are the pros and cons that you list down before you came

up with the final judgment?

- It was not easy to decide, since each scenario has the possibility to be either positive and negative. As I

read and answered these questions, I consider my surrounding, not just myself but also those who actually

experience and facing these circumstances. Most of the scenarios are resulting in negative impacts which

we cannot deny are actually happening in our lives. Most statements describe a lot about economic and

globalization cases which actually occur right now in this era, including the occurrences of Covid-19. Of

course, to help me from understanding and answering these scenario cases, I surf the internet to read

some articles, journals, and opinions of netizens so that I can further understand and come up with my

final judgment.
