Energy

Energy Conversion

Energy exists in various forms and kinds. Energy can be changed from one form to
another. The change of energy from one form to another is called energy
transformation or energy conversion.

This light energy is then used by

The Sun is the main source green plants to make their own food
of energy on the Earth. by the process called photosynthesis.
Nuclear energy of the Sun During photosynthesis, light energy
changes to light energy. from the Sun is converted into
chemical energy in plants.

Chemical energy stored in

heat energy and mechanical body temperature while mechanical
energy when plants are energy is used to do daily activities
eaten by animals. like breathing, walking and working.

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but may be changed from
one form to another. This is known as the law of conservation of energy.

In battery-operated torchlight,
chemical energy is first converted
into electrical energy in the battery
which is then converted into light
energy and heat energy in the bulb

Chemical energy of petrol is converted

into mechanical energy. A car battery
changes chemical energy into electrical
and thermal energy, that electrical
energy is when changed into light
energy, sound energy, and thermal
energy.

In an electric lamp, electrical energy is

converted into heat energy and light

Let’s Explore
Let us make an oven that runs on solar energy.
1. Take a cardboard box (such as a pizza box), a plate, aluminium foil, a black
thick sheet of paper, cling film and a cube of frozen butter (or a cheese
slice).
2. Cover the inside of the box lid with aluminium foil and the base with the black
sheet.
3. Place the food item on the plate in the base of the box.
4. Position the box such that it faces the Sun and adjust the lid so that light is
reflected onto the food.
5. Use a tape to fix the lid at this position.
6. Cover the food base with cling film to keep food clean.
Observe after 30 minutes. Note your observations.
