The Field of Burnt Rice is the site of a mass rice paddy burning conducted by local
villagers who scorched their rice fields in an effort to stop them from falling into the
hands of the Siamese invaders in 1821. Take an afternoon to visit this site. Allegedly,
heavy rain still sometimes brings traces of burnt grains to the surface.
The Atma Alam Batik Art Village is Langkawi’s main batik production and sales centre.
This half-acre centre consists of a batik workshop, art gallery, showroom, and handicraft
shop.
Kota Mahsuri
Mahsuri was a Malay princess who was unfairly accused of adultery and sentenced to
death. This complex comprises her shrine – an enclosed slab of white stone – as well as a
recreation of an old-fashioned Malay house. There is also a theatre – where rare music
performances take place – and a few food shops.
Getting There
How to get to Langkawi
By Air
Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and Air Asia operate daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala
Lumpur. International travelers from certain places such as Osaka, Taipei and London
can connect with MAS flights directly from their country or other airlines, depending on
their availability in that particular region.
Air Asia is the airborne version of a cheap local minibus, so you can’t go wrong if you’re
looking for a good deal without the frills. Visitors from Singapore can use Silk Air which
also flies directly to Langkawi daily.

Langkawi Culture & History
Charming, Beautiful, Tax-Free
Langkawi’s name is believed to have originated from the abundance of eagles on the
island and the geological wonder of its landscape. By putting together ‘helang’ (eagle in
Malay) and ‘kawi’ (marble in Sanskrit), you get the moniker ‘helang-kawi’ which was
eventually toned down to Langkawi.
