Part 1
GRADE 1st Grade

SUBJECT Science and Math

For this lesson students will learn about the important role a honeybee plays in our
ecosystem and awareness will be brought to the possible extinction of honey bees. We
LESSON SUMMARY
will discuss how we can create a safe haven for bees and students will create their
own bee motels to provide homes for bees.

How is Theory applied

in this lesson?

ISTE Standards for Students How will you address the ISTE Standards for Students?

-ISTE Standard #1.2 Digital Citizen: When using pear deck slides students will be virtually engaging with other
students in the class. Students will understand the importance to engage positively, safely, respectfully with
others; as well as being mindful of other diverse opinions and perspectives. Students will engage in positive digital
citizenship.
-ISTE Standard # 1.1 Empowered learner: Students will use their computer to login, navigate to Canvas, and
locate their virtual STEM classroom. Students will apply their previous technological knowledge in order to
conduct those steps on their own as well as be able to understand how to conduct some troubleshooting
strategies such as refreshing their browser and restarting their computer.

STATE or COMMON CORE How will you address your States or the Common Core standards?

-K-2-ETS1-1.Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change
to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
During the lesson students will be gathering information on the potential honeybee extinction and how people
want to change this situation. They will ask questions in regards to what they learn of the honeybees to deepen
their understanding. Students will learn how they can use the invention of a bee motel, which is built from several
objects to improve one another, to aid this situation. They will engage in a hands-on experience where they will
invent and create their own bee motel.
-CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.1
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes
(e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. During the independent
practice component of the lesson students will create shapes and measure even shapes, combining various
shapes to construct a bee motel. Students will draw shapes to possess defining attributes on cardstock during this
portion and construct them using duct tape.
-CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.2
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide
some sense of closure. For the closing portion of this lesson students will write an informative text where they will
name the topic (honeybee), they will supply facts about honeybees (what they do, what is making them become
extinct, and one way to help them not become extinct), as well as include an introductory and concluding
sentence.

Version 2
05/2020
-CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8
With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided
sources to answer a question. For this lesson plan students will be recalling past memories and knowledge on
nature and honeybees. This will be done I. Many portions of the lesson plan as students connect their knowledge
to the content they are learning. This will be guided by the teacher as the teacher will be asking open-ended
questions during the lesson which will require students to recall information both from previous knowledge and the
content they have just learned.

MEASURABLE OBJECTIVE What will your students be able to do?

1. Students will be able to understand the role the honeybee plays in our ecosystem.
2. Students will be able to understand the role the honeybee plays in the food web.
3. Students will be able to identify one way they can help prevent honey bee extinction.
4. Students will be able to work collaboratively in groups.
5. Students will be able to identify some factors as to why the honeybee is going extinct.
6. Students will be able to understand the different roles a honeybee engages in.
7. Students will be able to identify various components of a honeybee’s home.

ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?

Formative Assessment: In order to see whether students have made progress towards my learning objectives I
will be asking open-ended questions through-out the lesson. This will help me see what students are or are not
understanding. If students have demonstrated progress I will move on with the lesson, however if students appear
to be struggling I will repeat parts of my lesson and provide additional support to students who need it. During the
google powerpoint presentation the EdTech tool pear deck slides will also be used as a form of formative
assessment as these slides are interactive and allow the teacher to measure student understanding while
conducting the lesson. Another way I will be using formative assessment is in the independent practice
component of my lesson. Here I will be assessing students on relating their learning to what they have built.
Students will not be assessed based on the appearance of their bee motel, but they will be assessed based on if
they can provide reasons using their knowledge from the videos as to why they have built their bee motel a certain
way.
Summative Assessment: In order to tell if a student has demonstrated mastery in my lesson I will be using a
rubric. This rubric will reflect my learning objectives and students will be graded on a scale which will be provided
on the rubric. This rubric will be used in the independent practice portion of my lesson where students will be
graded on their writing pieces and if the student is demonstrating understanding of what they have learned in this
writing piece. I will not be grading students on their “bee motel” as this will also be in the independent practice but
is to be used as a creative component of my lesson plan.

can share rules they think students in their class should follow to help
promote a healthy and positive learning environment. I will write these rules
on the board and when students are done sharing I will have them vote on
the ten they believe are most important. I will then create a classroom rule
chart which I will hang in my classroom with these ten rules. This will remain
hanging so students can use it as a reference and a reminder of the
behaviors they should and should not be engaging in.

How will you create and maintain a To create and maintain a supportive and safe learning environment in my
supportive and safe learning classroom I will be using a token economy where students will be given a

positive behaviors. Students will put this warm and fuzzy in their desk and at
the end of the week they can exchange it for a reward such as a desk pet
(small character eraser), a candy, or another prize. Students in the
classroom will be able to observe those who are given warm and fuzzies
which will help create models in my classroom. Other students will notice
these positive behaviors and mimic them to receive the same praise and
reward. Thinks will help increase positive behaviors in my classroom and
minimize disruptive behaviors.

learning to their past memories where they will be able to share these memories with
the class during the discussion. This will allow students to incorporate their interests
in the lesson. Another way I will keep students engaged and interested in the lesson
is by having flexible seating. For the opening component of my lesson this will take
place sitting on the rug, for the introduction to new material students will be sitting at
their desk, for the guided practice this will take place standing in the classroom or
outside, and the independent practice will take place at their desk. This will help

For this lesson an informal homework will be assigned where students will need to complete a task at home,
however they will not be graded on this. Students will take their bee motel home and discuss to their parents what
they have built and why they have built it. With the permission of parents, students will then hang their bee motel

LESSON REFLECTION (Pre – and Post – teaching the lesson)

Why do you think the assessment and rubric Why do you think the SEL strategy engages, enhances, or
would work in your content area? extends the lesson?
I believe that the assessment and rubric format I
have selected for my lesson plan will work for this
content area as they can be used together to
measure student understanding and whether
students have accomplished the learning
objectives I have created. Both the formative and
summative assessment will allow me to see what
students did or did not understand during the

lesson. This will help me target what areas of the
lesson will need to be reviewed deeper with the
students. As I will be teaching multiple areas of
content in one lesson the rubric will help me see
which of these content areas students are
demonstrating mastery in and which areas they
are not. I can use the grades from these rubrics to
place students in groups in regards to the grade
they received and the level it reflects as a learner.
Here I will be able to meet with these different
groups and personalize instruction and activities
for them so I can better support them in the
content area they need help in.
