Overall grade boundaries

Grade 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Mark range 0-14 15-29 30-44 45-59 60-74 75-84 85-100

Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers must be supported by working
and/or explanations. Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be given for a correct method, provided this is
shown by written working. You are therefore advised to show all working.

1. [Maximum mark: 3]

Simplify

2. [Maximum mark: 3]

Given that A > 0, B > 0, C > 0, simplify the expression below.

3. [Maximum mark: 4]

Express the following in the form of a single power (𝑥 𝑦 )

4. [Maximum mark: 4]

(a) Write down the following numbers in increasing order.

[3]

(b) State which of the numbers in part (a) is irrational. [1]

5. [Maximum mark: 5]

The planet Earth takes one year to revolve around the Sun. Assume that a year is 365 days and the path
of the Earth around the Sun is the circumference of a circle of radius 150 000 000 km.

(a) Calculate the distance travelled by the Earth in one day.

(answer in 3 significant figures) [4]

(b) Give your answer to part (a) in the form 𝑎 × 10𝑘 where 1 ≤ 𝑎 < 10 and 𝑘 ∈ ℤ . [1]
6. [Maximum mark: 4]

The following diagram shows a rectangle with sides of length 9.5 × 102 m and 1.6 × 103 m.

Find the area of the rectangle in the form 𝑎 × 10𝑘 where 1 ≤ 𝑎 < 10 and 𝑘 ∈ ℤ .

(i) the 𝑥-intercept ;

(ii) the gradient. [2]

A second line, 𝐿2, intersects the y-axis at P(0,2) and is parallel to 𝐿1.

(b) Find the equation of 𝐿2. Give your answer in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑐. [1]

8. [Maximum mark: 7]
