PASSIVE VOICE

The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action
rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most
important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence.Focus is on the action.
Sometimes we use the passive voice because we don't know or do not want to express who
performed the action.
If we want to say who or what performs the action while using the passive voice, we use the
preposition by.
The passive voice in English is composed of two elements:
the appropriate form of the verb 'to be' + past participle

Subject + to be (conjugated) + past participle + rest of sentenc

Simple present

The is cleaned every day.

Present continuous

The is being cleaned at the moment.

Simple past

The was cleaned yesterday.

Past continuous

The was being cleaned last week.

Present perfect

The has been cleaned since you left.

Past Perfect Simple


We form Past Perfect Simple tense with had + past participle of the main verb

Affirmative :I When I tried to phone them nobody answered because everyone had gone
swimming.

interrogative: Had everyone gone swimming?

negative :Everyone hadn`t gone swimming.

USE: We use Past Perfect Simple when we talk about one event happened before another
event in the past.

I wanted to visit my friend but I realised that she had gone shopping.

Indefinite pronouns
1.everyONE-all (people,things,place)2.someONE we do not know which
(person,thing,place)3.anyONE-we do not care it doesn`t matter which
(person,thing,place)4.noONE-not any(person,place,thing)

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

The Past Perfect Continuous is used for actions happening over a period of time .

1.to talk about things that started in the past and continued until another time in the past.

2.to talk about things that have stopped and had a result in the past.

3.to focus on how long an activity had been happening.

Formation-Past perfect Continuous

had+been=Verb+ing

They had been waiting for hours

Had they been waiting for hours?-question

They hadn`t been waiting for hours.-negative

Collocations
A collocation is two or more words that often go together. These combinations just sound
"right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. On the other hand, other
combinations may be unnatural and just sound "wrong".
*to take an exercise;to have an operation;to get better;to make an appointment;to see a
doctor;to feel sick
