(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Philosophy is a study that seeks to understand the series of existence and

reality. It tries to discover the nature of truth and knowledge to find what is of basic
value and importance of the life. It also examines the relationship between humanity,
nature and between individual and society.

Philosophy is also defines as the science that by natural light of reason studies
the first causes or highest principle all things under this definition.
The holistic perspective describes different kinds of interactions, and important
aspects of how we asses of how we as self-aware beings perceive reality.
The partial point of view in philosophy is define as a way or a method how one
sees or perceives the reality or a phenomenon. A partial point of view then is a
perspective that is based on one of the component part as a whole.
To sum it up, the holistic point of view looks at all aspects of the given problem or
situation and the partial point of view looks only at a limited number of aspects of the
given problem or situation.

Philosophy has a value in our daily life. It belongs in the lives of everyone. It help
us solve our problems- mundane or abstract, and it helps us make a better decisions
by developing our critical thinking which is very important in the age of disinformation.
Philosophy affects our life. It doesn’t just tell us what to believe. It also helps us
improve our thinking by improving our ability to be reasonable. Philosophy helps assure
us that manipulation and poor arguments will have a lower impact on our beliefs and
good arguments and evidence will have a larger impact on our beliefs.
Philosophy isn’t just the most valuable way to obtain a broad perspective in life. It
is obtaining a broad perspective in life. Philosophy is the love of knowledge, the pursuit
of truth, and the questioning of all ideas.

Activity Title : Philosophical Reflection

Learning Target: : I can do a philosophical reflection on a concrete situation
from a holistic perspective.
References : Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

We already discussed the philosophy in a holistic and partial point of view in our
previous lesson. We also tackle the value of doing philosophy in obtaining a broad
perspective on life and also the value of philosophy in our daily lives.
Now let’s do an application of what you have learned from our previous lesson.
All of you are required to do a philosophical reflection on a concrete situation from a
holistic perspective. There are different ways that you can do this but because of our
current situation I decide to choose an essay type for this activity.
One of the concrete situations that can be used as an example is the spiral
progression of the K-12 curricula. It holistically touches the general basic needs of
education.
The idea is a progressive type approach to learning to start from the basic up to
the needed learning competencies. The curriculum continuously improved to fit the
changes and provide the needed skills development of pupils and students. It starts
from the smallest up to the difficult lessons.

Now you are assigned to write an essay, and choose your topic for your writing
assignment. Your philosophical reflection should composed of atleast 10 sentences.

Choices for your topic are the following:

1. What role has school played in your life?

2. What fears do you have? How do you deal with them?
3. As a student, how can you live a life of abundance?

Activity Title: Opinion and Truth
Learning Target: I can distinguish opinion from truth
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

In philosophy, an opinion is a judgment, a viewpoint, or statement that is not

conclusive, rather than truth which are true statements. Opinion is based on your
personal judgment.
An example of opinion is the San Francisco Giants are the best baseball team,
another example of opinion is purple is the best color.
In philosophy, the concept of truth is considered in epistemology and ontology. A
truth can be defined as something that is the case- that is a state of affairs. Facts may
be understood as information that makes a true sentence true.
An example of truth is that the world is round. Another example of truth is that
CoVid19 gives an extreme fear to the people.
Truth is a statement that can be proven true. An opinion is an expression of a
person’s feelings that cannot be proven. Opinion can be based on facts or emotions and
sometimes they are meant to deliberately mislead others.

1. What is opinion?
2. What is truth?

Activity Title Methods of Philosophizing
Learning Target: I can distinguish the different Methods of Philosophizing.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

A method of Philosophizing is a process of determining the truth or drawing a

conclusion from statement using various philosophical methods such as; Socratic.
Dialectic, Scientific and Historical.
The Socratic Method also known by the Greek term "elenchus" is an exchange of
ideas using Socratic Questioning. In a classroom setting this method is used not to
intimidate students but to produce a deeper understanding of thoughts and ideas
through further questioning statements or claims.
The term dialectic comes from the Greek word "dialektike" which means "the art
of conversation". In philosophy, it is a method of coming up with a conclusion from
exchange of contradicting logical argument. The aim of dialectic, as a process of
dialogue, is the clarification notions and arguments with other people. In this process,
personal and shared conceptions should be considered.
The scientific method is also called empirical method is a process of determining
truth of knowledge through experimentation, inductive and deductive reasoning, and
hypothesis or theory testing.
The scientific method could trace its history from classical period with Aristotle giving
the earliest structured theory on the scientific approach. The scientific method also
values observation as an important aspect because it contributes to further
understanding the results of the hypothesis testing.
The Historical method is the process of gathering evidences, examining them
and by formulating ideas about the past to come up with present truths. The process of
learning the truth is simply through looking at past records to validate the present
hypothesis.

Truth in metaphysics and the philosophy of language, the property of sentences,

assertions, beliefs, thoughts or propositions that are said, in ordinary discourse, to
agree with the facts or to state what the case is.
Truth is something that has been proven by facts or sincerity. An example of truth
is someone giving their real age.
Example of truth in a situation is that Covid-19 is a virus that is new and has no
vaccine against this virus.
Opinion is a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on
fact or knowledge. It is a belief or judgment that falls short of absolute conviction,
certainty or positive knowledge; it is a conclusion that certain facts, ideas, etc. are
probably true or likely to prove so.
Example some people have an opinion that life begins at birth and that abortion
should be illegal or restricted only to rare situation.

Activity Title: The Human Body, Imposing Limits and Possibilities

Learning Target: I can recognize and give examples of body limitations.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Before we go to our new lesson let us first define transcendence since it will play
a big part on our today’s lesson. In philosophy, transcendence conveys that the basic
ground concept from the world’s literal meaning, of climbing or going beyond, albeit with
varying connotations in its different historical and cultural stages.
From a biological and physical standpoint, it recognizes that the body although it
can perform many functions also has limitations. Limits in the environment,
demographics and society may also hinder a person from reaching transcendence.
Here are some examples of body limitations; Mental and Emotional disorders
(e.g. anxiety, intellectual disability), disability (e.g. deafness, computed), disease and
illness (e.g. hypertension, cough), failures and experiences (e.g. failing subject)
How do we overcome our body limitations? Body limits can be tested by trying
on new experiences and working on challenges with increasing levels of difficulty. The
human body, it give enough exposure to any situation can attain a goal with efficiency.
Social and Environmental limitations are difficult to overcome their bodily limitations
because they solve this to influence their people and external world. However, with a
proper mindset, clearly defined goals and motivation to rise above challenges one
successfully overcome his/her limitations.

transcendence.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Every person has limitations, but that doesn’t mean those limitations cannot be
surpassed. We can see it as an obstacle, impossible yet possible. As a person it is
normal to have more than one thing you’re not good at, we can if we want tp. That is
why we don’t particularly believe in the saying that “nobody is perfect”, we are God’s
creations who strive for perfections. Therefore, it’s just a speck of a problem in our huge
world.
Now try to evaluate your own limitations and possibilities for transcendence by
answering the following questions below.

1. What are your limitations as a person?
2. What are the things that you consider difficult to accomplish or believe in?

Activity Title: Prudence and Frugality

Learning Target: I can understand and give examples of prudence and frugality.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Let’s first define and know what is prudence and frugality. Prudence is the ability
to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. It is the act of being careful, often
with money. It produce good judgment or wisdom gained from experience and
knowledge, expresses in a realistic and frugal attitude.
For you to be able to understand further what is prudence. I will give you an
example.
Nina’s prudence with her finances is a major factor in the success of her small
business.
An example of prudence is checking your bank account before you spend money.

What is frugality? Frugality is the quality of being frugal, sparing, thrifty, prudent,
or economical in the consumption of consumable resources such as food, time or
money, and avoiding waste, lavishness or extravagance.
A person who lives simply and economically can be called frugal. Buying clothes
at consignment shop would be considered frugal. Thrifty, Spartan, and prudent are
synonyms for frugal, a word that often has positive connotations when used to describe
a person who lives a simple life.
Example of frugality is a couple being frugal by clipping coupons. The definition
of frugal is not spending a lot of money and not being wasteful. An example of frugal is
someone who uses coupons to buy groceries.

Activity:
1. What is prudence?
2. What is frugality?

Activity Title: Care for the Environment

Learning Target: I can observe that care for the environment contributes to health,
well-being and sustainable development.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Environmental health can be integrated into sustainable development by

improving environmental quality for the poorest populations with the greatest burden of
environmental diseases, by reducing exposures to air pollution in homes and villages
from biomass burning, and providing clean water and sanitation.
Many things in the environment can affect our health. Hazardous substances
found in the air, soil and water can originate from a variety of sources, such as
agricultural and industrial activities, mining operations, landfills and leaky underground
storage tanks.
Beyond outward appearances, being clean and organized is also essential for
practicing good mental health. Spaces that are cluttered make for easy distractions,
which can actually impair your brain’s ability to process information and leave you
feeling unsettled.
It is true that environmental influences, including parenting, affect personality.
Based on genetic data, researchers have concluded that environment accounts for
approximately 50-70 percent of personality. But researchers also have found the
environments that children from the same family share with each other exert as much
weaker influence on their personalities than the environments that each child
experiences individually.

Activity Title: Virtues of Prudence and Frugality

Learning Target: I can demonstrate the virtue of prudence and frugality towards
environment by giving a situation
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

The word frugality is oftentimes used in money; thriftiness or a quality of being

economical with money, and frugality coupled with the word prudence which simply
means intelligent, creates a better world in our environment.
Prudence and frugality can play a great role in contributing towards the benefit of
the environment. With prudence, a person can plan to buy in bulk at least some of the
commodities that he uses regularly or on a daily basis.
Application of prudence and frugality in natural resources should be done in a
good manner. Increasing and unnecessary use of woods and coals should be stopped
instead try to rely on alternative resources for example of you are using wood fire to
keep yourself warm instead try to use warm clothes.
With new forms of technological advances that make life easier, the seemingly
simple task of demonstrating prudence and frugality towards the environment becomes
a challenge. One must realize that the process involved in the environment is not
occurring as fast as modern technologies do. Looking deeper, exercising prudence and
frugality towards the environment is both a personal and collective responsibility.
The following are examples: cooking and consuming food with little to no
leftovers, planting trees in replacement of cut-down ones, employing waste segregation
strategies in the community and recycling reusable materials.

Activity:
1. What do you mean by prudence and frugality?
2. In five sentences, how can you show prudence and frugality in your everyday life
routine?

Activity Title: Exercising Prudence in Choices

Learning Target: I can evaluate and exercise prudence in choices
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

In making decision, it is critical to determine the adverse effects beforehand to

avoid greater risks. Exercising prudence in choice implies that one has already criticized
all available options, and a well-thought-of choice has been made.

Being prudent means making wise decisions based on principal and managing your
practical affairs in a shrewd and discreet manner. Studies have shown that people who
lead a more prudent, conscientious life can also end up having a longer, healthier
life. You can make more of an effort to practice this cardinal virtue by being prudent at
home, at work, or at school.

For example, maybe your siblings are having a disagreement about you should
wash the dishes after dinner. Exercise prudence by suggesting that it would be fair for
the person who washed the dishes the night before to be given the night off and given
the option of not doing the dishes that night.

Activity:
How will you demonstrate prudence in the following scenarios?
 You do not have many friends in school, but in fraternity-known for their
hazardous activities- is recruiting you to be part of their brotherhood.
 A trusted colleague is inviting you to invest in her restaurant business.

Activity Title: Choice and Consequence

Learning Target: I can realize that in every choice there’s always a consequence.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Choice is defined as act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two
or more possibilities. The consequence is a result of an action or condition. While both
of those definitions are fairly short and straight to the point, they still leave a lot to talk
about when it comes to our lives.

With each choice comes a consequence. No amount of rationalizing or

complaining will alter the consequence. If you pick up one end of a stick (choice), you
also pick up the other end of the stick (consequence of that choice). There is a human
desire to be miraculously delivered from the consequences of an action.

Try to analyze the given example below.

It’s the night before the Big Exam. For weeks you’ve been skipping class or, when you
did show up, wiling away your classroom hours by texting back-and-forth with your
friends. Now, with imminent failure facing you, you decide to go blow off steam with your
friends. Hung-over and unprepared, of course you fail the Big Exam. Which means you
fail the class and, since your GPA has slipped to an unacceptable level, you lose your
athletic scholarship. You won’t be back in the Fall.

acon out of the fire.

That’s not the point. The point is this

You can choose your actions, or you can choose your consequences, but
you can’t choose both.

1. Define choice and consequences.
2. In five sentences, why do you think some things are given up while others are

The ability to exercise’s ones freedom in any other / matter is called Freedom of
choice. By law, all human being are entitled to make decision for them in whatever way
they choose to.
Freedom of choice also includes the way one acts towards another. All forms of
action, therefore are brought by a person’s decision to accomplish them. All decisions
big or small, have corresponding consequences which may be good or bad.

 The only exception to this rule is when an absolute choice harms or delimits the

Activity Title: Intersubjectivity

Learning Target: I can realize that intersubjectivity requires accepting
differences and not imposing on others.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Each person has a subjective experience of the world. However because of this
subjective experience, one cannot know which events occur in reality as w/c is product
of self-perception.
Social interaction among individuals through comparison agreement & confirmation of
each other’s perceptions make us easier to determine real events occurring in society.
This concept is called intersubjectivity.
Intersubjectivity - the shared perception or reality between or among two or more
individuals. A major principle of intersubjectivity is communization a social process
wherein the community of other people are seem as embedded within the self. This is
much like the concept of empathy or being in the shoe of others.
A good way to think about intersubjectivity is to imagine how you relate to your
family and friends. Maybe your mother enjoyed playing tennis. She took you with her
when she practiced, and you always had a good time. Growing up, you decided to join
the school tennis team. If your mother had not played tennis with you growing up, you
may not have grown like the sport. Your experience with tennis is called intersubjectivity
because it was influenced by another person. In order to better understand we first be
need to define a subject and an object. A subject is the person experiencing an action
or event. An object is what is being experienced.
When we say something is objective, we mean that it is factually true. When we
say that something is subjective, we mean that it is based on an opinion, or a biased
viewpoint, not on hard facts.

ACTIVITY:

1. What is intersubjectivity?
2. What do you think is the reason why we don’t need to impose other personality
and accepts that everyone is unique?

Learning Target: I can explain how an individual forms society and how society
transforms individual.
References: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
(Author, Title, Pages) Christine Carmela R. Ramos Ph.D

Individuals are the building blocks of society. They take on various social roles to
ensure the smooth flow of social processes that regularly occur in the community.
However, it is the collective action of individuals that mainly influence how society is
formed and transformed.
Individual can form societies by interacting with one or more other individual.
Their pattern of interaction is what we call a society, but society is an abstraction, not a
concrete thing.
People and Society have a reciprocal and complementary relationship. People’s
personalities and culture depend upon the processes and events that occur in society.
Similarly, society takes its changes from how people act, perceive and shape it.
Example: If many people of a certain community perceive catcalling as offensive and
derogatory, then society will have an unwritten norm that such an act is unacceptable.
With a repetition of this process, a community can form and develop its culture and
character.
Reciprocally, society also transforms individuals into social and cultural beings.
As a part of society, individuals experience Enculturation or the process by which
people acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and culture embedded in society. These
social and cultural qualities vary across cultures since they are also created and
influenced by human action. As such, you may notice that different communities have
unique cultures, traditions and norms
Example:
The openness of Thai people to gender differences had made their country diverse in
terms of social partnership and preference.
In the Philippines, making slurping sounds while eating noodles is a sign of disrespect.
However, in Japan doing the same act is a positive way of expressing satisfaction with
food.
