1.1 What is Virtual Safety Instrumented System w ith Electronic

Marshalling?

Ovation Virtual Safety Instrumented System with Electronic Marshalling (Virtual SIS CHARMs)
enables the simulation of hardware components of an SIS CHARMs system. Virtual SIS CHARMs
can be used to prepare and test safety logic without the actual hardware. It is used in a Safety
Instrumented System to place and/or maintain the equipment under control in an appropriate
state.

Hardware-based Safety Instrumented System with Electronic Marshalling is a set of components

that includes sensors, CHARM Smart Logic Solvers (CSLSs), CHARMs I/Os, and final control
elements. The purpose of these components is to respond to plant conditions, which may be
hazardous. Safety Instrumented System with Electronic Marshalling must generate the correct
output to prevent the hazard or reduce the consequences of the hazard. For more information,
refer to the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) with Electronic Marshalling User Guide.

Virtual SIS CHARMs enables the virtualization of CHARM Smart Logic Solvers (CSLSs) and
CHAMRs I/Os that are connected to it.

The Virtual SIS CHARMs system can be configured with a hardware-based Ovation system or a
Virtual Ovation system. Virtual SIS CHARMs uses the Virtual Controllers (see page 15).

The Virtual SIS CHARMs application replicates the behavior of the SIS CHARMs hardware in the
closest possible manner. It reduces the engineering cost and allows you to understand the
system without compromising the real hardware.

1.2 Functions of Virtual SIS CHARMs

The Virtual SIS CHARMs performs the following functions:

 Simulates the hardware components.
 Allows preparing and testing the SIS logic before using it in the production environment.
 Helps training the Ovation SIS operators.
 Reduces the engineering costs.

CHARMs components

Adding and configuring the various software components of Virtual SIS CHARMs involves an
understanding of the Ovation Developer Studio. Many procedures, such as adding networks,
devices, and points, require using options from the Developer Studio’s right-click menu. Emerson
recommends that you familiarize yourself with the Ovation Developer Studio functions before
configuring Virtual SIS CHARMs components. Refer to the Ovation Developer Studio User Guide
for more information.

Note: Before an SIS point can be deleted, it must be in the Local Safety Network (LSN) and not
in the SIS CHARMs Smart Logic Solver, have all references removed, and moved using the
drag- and-drop operation to the parent Controller.

5.3 Verify SIS licenses

SIS can only be enabled if SIS licenses are installed on the Ovation system. Before starting the
SIS configuration, verify the availability of the SIS licenses. The SIS licenses are accessed
through the Developer Studio. Refer to the Ovation Developer Studio User Guide for more
information.

5.4 Accessing the Ovation Developer Studio

ATTRIBUTE DESCRIPTION

Scan Rate Indicates the CHARMs Smart Logic Solver loop time. The available scan rates are
50ms, 100ms, 150ms, and 200 ms per period. The default rate is 50 ms.

I/O Data Update Determines the update rate of Ovation points in milliseconds. The CHARMs
Time Smart Logic Solver scans I/O CHARMs in 50 ms loop.
Shadow block Refers to a specific Controller area where all the control sheets that contain
Control Task shadow algorithms are scanned at the same frequency.
Points are grouped by control tasks so they can be updated (scanned) at different
rates. The rate is set in the applicable Ovation configuration tool during
configuration for a Controller drop.

5.9.3 Configuring the VCSLS Proof Testing tab

After you insert a new SIS CHARMs Smart Logic Solver in the Ovation Developer Studio, a
configuration window for the new device appears. Use the Proof Testing tab to set the appropriate
attributes for the new SIS CHARMs Smart Logic Solver.

Note: The purpose of this setting is to configure the proof testing. However, it does not proof
test the Virtual hardware or the real VM hardware.

In Ovation SIS, manual and automatic proof testing is available and you can set the reminders to
perform them.
 You can configure the Proof test timer period so that when the timer period expires, there is
an automatic transfer to the backup CHARMs Smart Logic Solver. This forces a reboot and
diagnostics are performed (only available for redundant CHARMs Smart Logic Solvers).
 You can configure the Proof test timer to generate an SIS Event before the Proof Test timer
expires.
 If a CHARMs Smart Logic Solver fails the power diagnostic during boot up, it tries again. If it
fails a second time, the CHARMs Smart Logic Solver enters a "reduced mode." This mode is
indicated through the CHARMs Smart Logic Solver RN record.
