1 Introduction to Ovation PlantWeb Alerts

IN THIS SECTION

What are PlantWeb Alerts? ................................................................................................. 1

What are the types of PlantWeb Alerts? ............................................................................. 2
What are the types of non-PlantWeb Alerts? ...................................................................... 2

1.1 What are PlantWeb Alerts?

PlantWeb Alerts are a special type of alarm generated by Fieldbus devices for the purpose of
providing self-checking, fault diagnostics, and user support.

Note: PlantWeb Alerts are separate and distinct from process alarms.

The Ovation PlantWeb Alert function requires three necessary components: intelligent field
devices capable of generating alerts, the Ovation Alarm system for displaying the alerts, and the
AMS Device Manager software for obtaining additional information about the alert.

The term PlantWeb Alert is the name given to alerts that are generated from devices that are
part of the Emerson PlantWeb family of products. The term Non-PlantWeb Alert describes the
alerts that are produced by intelligent devices that are not part of the PlantWeb system. Note that
devices that have alert capability (whether or not they are part of PlantWeb) automatically
generate these alarms and can be interpreted by a host system without any special user
configuration. This is because intelligent devices contain alarm definition data in their Device
Description (DD) files which are supplied by the manufacturer of the device.

Even though devices have the ability to generate alerts, the Ovation system must be configured to
recognize them. At the time of configuration, a node point (RN type) must be assigned to a
device. This node point is the means by which the Ovation system reads the alert in the device
and sends the information to the Alarm system. The node point is given a priority (level of
importance) depending on the alert type that is being generated. See To configure a Fieldbus
device for PlantWeb Alerts (see page 7).

The Ovation Alarm system is used to display alert information to the operator. An alarm type
called DEVALRT has been created in the Alarm system to display both PlantWeb Alert types (see
page 2) and Non-PlantWeb Alert types (see page 2). For DEVALRT alarms, the Value field on the
Alarm window contains information for the applicable alert type that is currently active.

The AMS Device Manager software is a complete maintenance and device management tool for
instrumentation, analytical equipment, and control valves. It moves your plant toward the mode of
predictive maintenance by allowing you to do diagnostics, configuration, calibration management,
and documentation quickly and easily.

OW360_32 1
1.2 What are the types of PlantWeb Alerts?

1.2 What are the types of PlantWeb Alerts?

PlantWeb Alerts are categorized into four alert types: advisory alerts, maintenance alerts,
failure alerts, and communication alerts.
 Advisory Alerts -- Allow maintenance personnel to address a problem BEFORE it impacts
operations. These alerts are presented as an aid to maintenance planning. For example, an
intelligent digital valve controller may generate an alert when a valve has cycled a certain
number of times. Maintenance personnel could then use this alert to schedule further
diagnostics or check the valve for wear.
 Maintenance Alerts -- Indicate that a malfunction has occurred (or is about to occur), and
what the effects might be. For example, an intelligent pressure transmitter could generate a
maintenance alert, indicating that a valid process variable is no longer available.
Maintenance personnel can use the alert, together with diagnostic and repair data from the
Asset Management System (AMS) Device Manager, to determine corrective actions. Plant
operators use this alert to determine the possible effect on plant process measurement and
safety. The urgency of the repair can be assessed by the operator and priority allocated for
maintenance attention. With this information, maintenance personnel know the priority
requested, the location of the problem equipment, and what tools or parts are needed. This
speeds maintenance response and reduces the cost of repair.
 Failure Alerts -- Indicate a failure has occurred that renders the device inoperative.
Maintenance personnel use the AMS Device Manager information screens to show the parts
and procedures required for repairing the failure. Operators use the information to keep the
plant in a safe operating condition.
 Communication Alerts -- Indicate that the Ovation system is unable to communicate with the
device.
At the time of configuration, priorities are assigned to each PlantWeb Alert type. See To configure
a Fieldbus device for PlantWeb Alerts (see page 7). Priorities may be assigned from 1 to 8, where
1 is the highest (most critical/important) and 8 is the lowest (least critical/important).

1.3 What are the types of non -PlantWeb Alerts?

Intelligent devices that are not part of the PlantWeb family may also generate alerts. The Ovation
system has the ability to recognize these alerts in the Alarm system as non-PlantWeb alerts.
Non-PlantWeb alerts are categorized into two types:
 Abnormal Alert -- Indicates that the device is not performing as it should be and requires
attention. Depending on the type of device issuing the alert, it could encompass various levels
of severity. See the manufacturer's documentation for more information.
 Communication Alert -- Indicates that the Ovation system is unable to communicate with the
device.
At the time of configuration, priorities are assigned to each non-PlantWeb Alert type. See To
configure a Fieldbus device for PlantWeb Alerts (see page 7). Priorities may be assigned from 1
to 8, where 1 is the highest (most critical/important) and 8 is the lowest (least critical/important).

2.1 What is the Ovation Developer Studio?

The Ovation Developer Studio is a comprehensive software application that manages the
configuration of the entire Ovation system. As a fully integrated advanced software program, the
Developer Studio creates and maintains Ovation drop types, control strategies, process graphics,
point records, and system-wide configurations, including security. Within the Developer Studio,
you can configure all of the Operator Station functions.

Using the Developer Studio, you are able to view and establish parameters and settings at the
System, Network, Unit, Drop, and Point level. Ovation configuration settings made at the system
level default down through the System Tree, but many settings can be adjusted at each
subsequent level. All configurations defined at the lower levels override what has been defined at
the higher levels. Ovation configuration information is specified at appropriate levels of the
system hierarchy. Refer to the Ovation Developer Studio User Guide.

2.2 Accessing the Ovation Developer Studio

When your Ovation system is loaded, the Developer Studio icon appears on your desktop.
Double-click the icon and the Developer Studio window appears. Refer to the Ovation Developer
Studio User Guide.

You can also access the Developer Studio from the context menu of the Operator Station
applications, such as Point Information. For more information, refer to the Ovation Operator
Station User Guide.

Note: Much of the setup and configuration of the Developer Studio contents and hierarchy is
performed by an Emerson representative before the system is installed in your plant.

3.1 What type of configuration is required to displa y alerts in

Ovation?

Even though intelligent field devices have the ability to generate alerts, the Ovation system must
be configured to recognize them. At the time of configuration, a node point (RN type) is assigned
to a device. This node point must be entered in order to display alert information in the Ovation
system. The node point is given a priority (level of importance) depending on the alert type that is
being generated. When an alert is issued, this point, along with its priority, is then displayed on
the Ovation Alarm window. The OPC Alarm Event Server connects into the Alarm system,
collects the alert data, and makes the data available to the AMS Device Manager. You can also
configure your Alarm system to only display certain types of alerts.

Note: This book assumes that you have already created a working device. For more information
on creating devices, refer to Ovation Foundation Fieldbus User Guide. If you are using the first
generation, gateway-based Fieldbus solution, follow the instructions in the Foundation Fieldbus
User Guide for Ovation 3.0.

After you have inserted a placeholder for your Fieldbus solution, you can configure your devices
for PlantWeb Alerts and configure alarm system filtering.

8. At the Device Supports Alarms field, the state of the check box indicates if the device you
are configuring supports alarm functionality. If it is checked, it supports alarms; if it is not
checked, it does not support alarms. This field applies to both PlantWeb Alerts and
non-PlantWeb Alerts.
9. At the Enable PlantWeb Alerts field, select the check box if you want your Ovation system to
recognize the PlantWeb alerts from the device. Note that this does not affect the devices
ability to generate PlantWeb alerts.
10. Under the Advisory Alarms section, notice the following fields:
 The first check box is checked if the device that you are configuring supports Advisory
alarms. The system obtains this information from the device.
 Select the second check box if you want the Ovation system to recognize Advisory
alarms for this device.
 If the Ovation system accepts these alarms, assign a priority for this type of alarm. A
priority of 1 is the highest priority and a priority of 8 is the lowest priority. This priority is
then set in the P3 field of the node point that you defined for this device.
11. Under the Maintenance Alarms section, notice the following fields:
 The first check box is checked if the device that you are configuring supports
Maintenance alarms. The system obtains this information from the device.
 Select the second check box if you want the Ovation system to recognize Maintenance
alarms for this device.
 If the Ovation system accepts these alarms, assign a priority for this type of alarm. A
priority of 1 is the highest priority and a priority of 8 is the lowest priority. This priority is
then set in the P2 field of the node point that you defined for this device.
12. Under the Communication Alarms section, notice the following fields:
 The first check box is checked if the device that you are configuring supports
Communication alarms. The system obtains this information from the device.
 Select the second check box if you want the Ovation system to recognize

then set in the P1 field of the node point that you defined for this device.
13. Under the Failed Alarms section, notice the following fields:
 The first check box is checked if the device that you are configuring supports Failed
alarms. The system obtains this information from the device.
 Select the second check box if you want the Ovation system to recognize Failed alarms
for this device.
 Note that for Failed alarms, there is no section to configure a priority. This is because the
priority is taken from the AP field of the node point you assigned to the device. When the
node point was created, it would have been assigned a priority for the AP field. Refer to
Ovation Developer Studio User Guide and Ovation Record Types User Guide for more
information.

3.3 What type of configuration is required for alarm system filtering for PlantWeb Alerts?

3.3 What type of configuration is required for alarm system filtering

for PlantWeb Alerts?

A plant operator has the ability to filter the alarms that are displayed on the Alarm window, sent to
the historian drop, sent to the printer, and annunciated on the Audio system. These filtering
definitions can be updated by the operator for both normal and priority modes of operation.

The filtering criteria used are priority, destination, alarm type, and optionally, unit parameters. The
filtering criteria used in the Alarm system is configured through the Ovation Developer Studio.
Refer to Ovation Developer Studio User Guide for more information.

You can select the priority, destination, and alarm type that a point must have in order to pass the
filter criteria. The alarm type filter allows the operator to select PlantWeb Alerts, process point
alarms and drop alarms. You can further filter on each specific PlantWeb Alert type: Failed,
Maintenance, Communication, Advisory and Abnormal.

You can use the Developer Studio to set default alarm filtering settings. These settings determine
what alarms appear on the various alarm lists at the Operator Station, what alarms are sent to the
printer, to audio, and what alarms are sent to the Historian for storage. Refer to Ovation Operator
Station Configuration Guide for more information.

You can configure temporary alarm filtering settings by using the ribbon Filter tab in the Alarm
window at the Operator Station. These settings temporarily override the default alarm filtering
settings but are canceled when the Alarm window is closed and all the filtering settings return to
the default settings that were configured in the Studio.

Note: Even if PlantWeb Alerts are selected for display, they must also pass the priority and
destination filtering as it is defined.

4.1 What is the DEV ALRT alarm type?

An alarm type called "DEVALRT" was created to display information on PlantWeb alerts and
non-PlantWeb alerts. When a device issues an alert, the Ovation Alarm system receives the alert
and displays a DEVALRT alarm type. The highest priority alert is used. (When the node point is
returned, the lowest defined priority is used.) However, if multiple alerts are active, the message
in the Value field identifies all active alerts. Finally, the OPC Alarm Event Server, which connects
into the Alarm System, collects the alert data and makes it available to the AMS Device Manager
software so that it can be displayed in its audit trail.

For DEVALRT alarms, the Value field contains information for the applicable types that are
currently active. Currently, devices can have only one active alert for each alert type; however,
different alerts (that is Failed, Maintenance, and so forth) can be active at the same time. For
PlantWeb Alert devices, the following types are valid:
 FAILED
 MAINT
 ADVISE
 NO COMM
For non-PlantWeb Alerts, the NO COMM and ABNORMAL alarm types are valid.

OW360_32 15
4.1 What is the DEVALRT alarm type?

To access the Alarm window, select the Alarms icon, located in the Operator Station Ovation
Applications folder. Refer to Ovation Operator Station User Guide. The following figure shows the

16 OW360_32
4.2 What is alarm filtering?

4.2 What is alarm filtering?

The ribbon Filter tab allows you to set or modify filtering information for the various alarm lists,
historical storage, and printing. Note that this information is initially configured in the Ovation
Developer Studio as the default values.

The alarms displayed in the Alarm window can be filtered based on destination, priority, alarm
type and, network/unit. Each point must pass the priority, destination, network/unit, and alarm
type filters in order to display on the specified list. Two modes of filtering (Normal Mode and
Priority Mode) exist in the Alarm system. The Filter tab shows both Normal and Priority Mode.
Refer to Ovation Operator Station User Guide for more information.

Priority

Eight priorities are defined in Ovation. Priority 1 is the highest (most critical/important) and 8 is the
lowest (least critical/important). The priority check boxes let you select which priorities pass the
filtering for the Alarm List, History List, Acknowledged List, Unacknowledged List, Reset List,
historical storage, and printer.

Destination (Plant Area)

An alarm destination is defined by the first character in each process point's set of characteristics.
This character generally represents a plant's locations. The AY record field holds the first
character for each process point. The destination check boxes allow the operator to select which
destinations pass the filtering for the Alarm List, History List, Acknowledged List,
Unacknowledged List, Reset List, historical storage, and printer.

Unit

The Alarm window can be configured to perform an additional filter based on network/unit. If unit
filtering is enabled, you can perform filtering on each of the networks/units.

Alarm Type

You can filter alarms based on the type of alarm it is. The types of alarms that can be filtered are
PlantWeb alerts, process point alarms, and drop alarms. By selecting the check box, you define
which type of alarm appears on the specified list (Alarm List, History List, Acknowledged List,
Unacknowledged List, Reset List, historical storage, and printer).

If the PlantWeb Alert type is selected for display, you can determine which type of alerts display
on the specified list (Alarm List, History List, Acknowledged List, Unacknowledged List, Reset List,
historical storage, and printer). The choices are Failed, Maintenance, Advisory, and
Communications for PlantWeb Alerts and Abnormal and Communications for non-PlantWeb
alerts.

4.2.1 To modify the Filtering window for PlantWeb Alerts

checked. If so, this means that PlantWeb Alerts will display on the selected alarm list (as long
as the other filtering criteria is met).
6. Navigate to the PlantWeb Alerts section. Check any alert types that you want to display on
the selected list. If an alert type is not selected, it will not appear on the specified list.

Note: The Set All button sets all the alert types for the specified list. The Clear All button clears
(uncheck) all the alerts for the specified list.

7. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for all the tabs at the top of the Alarm Filtering Definition window.
8. Select the Ok or Apply button to save the changes. The Cancel button closes the window
without saving any changes.

4.3 What is the Alert Details w indow ?

The Alert Details window is a live, updating window that shows you detailed information on
PlantWeb and non-PlantWeb alerts. It is accessed from the Point Menu (see page 19). In
addition, the Alert Details window allows you to suppress individual alert types.

The following topics explain the Alert Details window menus and fields.
 Alert Details window - menus (see page 20).

4.4 Suppressing an alert

Note that pressing the OK button does NOT send the file to print. It only confirms the settings on
the Print Setup window. To print, pull down the File menu, and select Print. To exit the Print
Setup window without saving any changes, press the Cancel button.

4.4 Suppressing an alert

You can use the Suppress and Unsuppress menu options to either suppress or unsuppress a
particular alert type. To suppress an alert type means that it has been removed from alarm
checking. Likewise, to unsuppress means that alarm checking has been enabled on that alert
type.

For example, if you right-click on a point in the Alert Details window, you may choose to suppress
Maintenance alerts. This means that the point will not be checked for maintenance alerts;
therefore, no maintenance alerts will display for that point. To allow that point to be checked again
for Maintenance alerts, you must right-click on that point again and navigate to the Unsuppress
menu item.

Note: In addition to suppressing alerts, the entire node point can also be alarm check removed.

When an alert is suppressed, the main Alarm window displays the appropriate code in the Code
field. If multiple conditions are set, the highest priority code displays. The codes are prioritized as
follows:

1. Alarm Check Removed (AR).

2. Communication Suppressed (CS).
3. Failed Suppressed (FS).
4. Abnormal Suppressed (NS).
5. Maintenance Suppressed (MS).
6. Advisory Suppressed (AS).

Note: The Suppress menu option is used to suppress an alert from appearing in the Ovation
system. To actually suppress the device from generating alerts, you must use the AMS Device
Manager software (see applicable vendor documentation).

5 Using AMS Device Manager for PlantWeb Alerts

IN THIS SECTION

What is the AMS Device Manager? .................................................................................. 29

To access the AMS Device Manager ................................................................................ 29

5.1 What is the AMS Device Manager?

The AMS Device Manager software is a complete maintenance and device management tool for
instrumentation, analytical equipment, and control valves. It moves your plant toward the mode of
predictive maintenance by allowing you to do diagnostics, configuration, calibration management,
and documentation quickly and easily.

The AMS Device Manager software is PlantWeb's interface to intelligent field devices. When a
device generates an alert, it is sent to the Ovation Alarm system. The OPC Alarm Event Server
connects into the Alarm system, collects the alert data, and makes the data available to the AMS
Device Manager software. The AMS Device Manager Audit Trail option provides alert
documentation without the extra labor and risk of errors required for manual reporting.

From the Ovation Alert Details window, you can access AMS Device Manager, which gives you
additional information on the specified alert and the device. Extra information includes data on
pressure, temperature, and memory failures. The AMS Device Manager can also be deployed
along with other AMS Device Manager plug-in packages, such as ValveLink and Calibration
Assistant, which allow you to keep track of maintenance and calibration records.

5.2 To access the AMS Device Manager

1. Access the Alert Details window (see page 19).
2. Right-click on an alert in the scrolling list and a Point Menu displays.
3. Select AMS Device Manager.

Note: AMS Device Manager is only active on this menu if AMS Device Manager is loaded on
the Operator Station on which you are working and if the point is a local point.

4. The AMS Device Manager appears. To learn more about using AMS Device Manager, use
the online help available on each dialog box or see the AMS Device Manager documentation.

Note: The AMS Device Manager icon appears in the system tray when the software is running.
