nce in a blue m n
When people say "Once in a blue moon" they mean "rarely."

But what's a blue moon?

When there·s a full moon . it seems like a perfect circle. We usually see a full moon every 29.5 days.
Most months are 30 or 31 days long, so there can be two full moons in one month. When this happens. we call
the second full moon a blue moon. This happens once every two and a half years.

Can we have more than one blue moon in the same year?
Yes. but it's very rare. lt happens every 19 years. and the months with the blue moon are almost always
January and March.

Is a blue moon actually blue? ~ .

No. it isn't. But if there·s a big forest tire W, or if a volcano erupts. the moon may look blue.

T he Qrient Express was a passenger

train route that went all around
Europe. The original starting and ending
points of the line were París and Istanbul,
with many stops in between. The first
train left from París on October lOLh, 1882,
around 6:30 in the evening, and got to
Vienna the next day at 11:20 at night. Cars
in the train included luggage cars, sleeper
cars, and dining cars. The Orient Express
was a famous mode of transportation
because it was convenient, but it was also
very mysterious and• intriguing. In fact,
it was even the inspiration for countless
novels, movies, TV shows, and video games.
The most famous of all these is probably
the Agatha Christie mystery, Murder on the
Orient Express.
The train system used to operate for over
a hundred years, but with the rise of cars
and other high speed railways, the Orient
Express became less popular. In December,
2009, the Orient Express stopped running
entirely.

Hey Derrick!

Guess what? I have sorne great stories to tell you about my visit to Cairo. I'm writing to tell you
one right now. It happened when we went to see the Pyramids.

Our tour guide took us to the Valley of the Queens. First, we went in the Queen's Chamber. There,
she showed us a dark passage. It led to a small room, but we couldn't visit it. It was closed to
the public. Then, when the guide wasn't looking, I went up the passage and into the small room.
Suddenly, the door closed behind me and the room was completely dark! Anyway, I was lucky
because I had a flashlight with me. When I turned on my flashlight, I saw two white faces right in
front of me! They looked just like mummies! I couldn't believe my eyes! I screamed and ran out
the door. I was absolutely terrified!

While I was trying to calm down outside, my friends, Jasen and Peter, carne out of the passage.
They were laughing so hard, they couldn't walk. Immediately I realized that I didn't see mummies
in the room. It was Jasen and Peter playing a joke on me! Now that I think about it, it's pretty
funny, but at the time it sure wasn't!

Well, that's all for now. Let's get together for coffee when I get back!

See you soon,

Tommy

One of the first things the astronaut
John Glenn had to do in space when he
orbited the Earth for the first time was
to try to eat something. NASA scientists
wanted to know if it was possible for a
human to eat in space. Sorne people
thought it might be too hard to swallow, since there is a feeling of weightlessness
in space anda lack of gravity. Glenn was able to eat just fine, though.

The most important thing about space food

is the packaging. lf a small crumb gets
loase in the low-gravity space shuttle, it
causes majar problems for the astronauts
and the equipment. Early versions of
space food were soft and carne in a
tube that was very similar to a tube of
toothpaste and astronauts squeezed it into
their mouths. There were also small cubes
of dry food, but it didn't look like real food.
So, scientists tried to find a way to make more realistic food, and package it in a
way that was suitable for space travel.
Nowadays, the food is much better, a
lot like the food we eat at home. Liquids
like coffee and orange juice still come
in a packet full of powder, though. When
the astronauts drink it, they use special
plastic bags and mix the powder with
water. Astronauts can cook their food
in a small kitchen and even sit down to
eat it. One interesting difference is that
space shuttles d~n't have a refrigerator!

Jeans are very popular today. They weren't always so popular,
though. lt took many years for the general public to embrace
blue jeans. In the 1850s, a German merchant named Levi
Strauss started selling jeans to mine workers in California.
They became popular because denim, the cloth used for
jeans, is a very strong material. However, sorne parts of the
jeans, like the pockets, used to rip a lot. So, Levi Strauss and his
business partner, Jacob Davis, added copper rivets to make them
stronger.

In the early 20 th century, jeans were popular

only with factory workers. In 1955, when
. James Dean starred in the movie Rebel
Without a Cause, wearing blue jeans, jeans
really took the fashion world by storm.
Teenagers wanted to copy his style and
jeans became a symbol of youth in the 50s
and 60s. After that, many more and different
styles and designs carne out.

F rom 1840 to 1869, more than 52,000
people in the U.S. decided to move
to the northwest of the country, and
they used the "Oregon Trail," a path
used for traveling there. Most of those
people ended up in Oregon, but others
went to California or Utah. So, what was
everyday life on the trail like?

T he "Oregon Trail" started in Missouri and went all the way to Oregon. For long trips
like this, people used to ride in a covered wagon. A cloth cover protected them and their
things from the weather when it was snowy or windy.

ll of a family's furniture, clothing, food , small animals and everything else were in the
A wagons, so they were really heavy. Animals like oxen, cow , or horses pulled the wagons.

T he Oregon trail was very dangerous. Many times people had to cross fast rivers in their
wagons, or they ran into bandits. It was hard to take care of sick people on the road.
Cooking was difficult, too. Most people used to cook over an open fire - even in the rain and
snow! Life on the trail definitely wasn't eas) , and even doing simple things was a challenge.
