2 PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for processes and other measures to be
established that will ensure the effectiveness and full compliance, to OHS (Working at Heights)
Regulations of 2013, of all activities of employees or contractors that are required to work at
heights. SCOPE

This policy forms part of the company’s Health and Safety Management System, concerning the
safety of employees, contractors undertaking operations, installation and delivery of services,
equipment, onsite maintenance and support services for all clients.

3 SCOPE
The Scope of this Policy includes all work that needs to be undertaken for the organisation or
clients irrespective of location, by the employees and contractors of the organisation, when
such work includes working at heights as defined in OSH Act 85 of 1993 and the Working at
Heights Regulation 2013.

4 OBJECTIVE
The objective of this Policy is to provide a Health and Safety Management Standard for Working
at Heights, which will eliminate, mitigate or control the hazards and risks within the company.
This policy is intended to ensure that management, employees and contractors are always in
full compliance to all South African Health and Safety legislations and all the applicable
International Health, Safety and Environmental standards and good practices.

5 RESPONSIBILITIES
Without derogating from the 16(1)’s liability for Health and Safety, the Section 16(2) appointee
may be given the overall responsibility and authority to ensure that the Working at Heights is
defined, documented and communicated to employees and contractors for the delivery of
services with regards to installation, equipment, onsite maintenance and support for clients.

6 POLICY STATEMENT
Management shall, whenever employees are required to work at heights, ensure that all
employees and contractors work strictly in accordance with this Health and Safety Policy and
the OSH Act Regulation of 2013 (Working at Heights) and the Working at Heights Procedure.

The Company’s Working at Heights Procedure must include the basic requirement of avoiding
working at heights if there is another option. Where Working at Heights is the only option the
following process shall be followed:

 A working at heights risk assessment, plan and procedure shall be compiled and
implemented by a competent person for all working at heights work, irrespective of
the height or the equipment used.
 No working at heights may take place unless the above process has been completed,
and all requirements or recommendations of the Working At Heights Risk
Assessment and Plan implemented prior to work commencing.
 A working at heights Job or Task Risk Assessment for each new job, which takes also
takes the environment and possible adverse conditions into consideration.
 Adequate planning and organising of working at height tasks.
 Suitable trained and competent Staff.
 Identify and assessing of suitable working at heights equipment and specialised
protection equipment.
 Maintenance of Working at Heights Safety Equipment.
 Identify and assessing of other safety precautions.
 A comprehensive Rescue Plan.
 Barricading or Fencing off.
 Any adverse consideration that may increase risk on the day.

7 COMMUNICATION
This policy, and related information on Health and Safety impact, will be communicated to all
relevant employees.

8 REVIEW PERIOD
The Section 16(2) appointee will review this policy annually, or if there is any change of
legislation that impacts this policy during the delivery of services with regards to installation,
equipment, onsite maintenance and support for clients.

9 ENFORCEMENT
This policy will be enforced upon sign off. Staff members and Contractors who do not adhere to
this process, could face disciplinary action which could lead to dismissal.

10 APPROVAL
We, the undersigned, herewith declare that we are duly authorised to sign this document and
hereby approve the contents as set out in the document.
