6 POLICY STATEMENT
Management is committed to ensure hazards are eliminated, substituted, or mitigated through
engineering, administrative or other controls, prior to resorting to the use of PPE. In some work
environments Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be provided and used to protect
personnel against hazards capable of causing injury, illness, or impairment. Management is
committed to provide appropriate PPE to employees who may be subjected to a hazardous
work condition.

6.1. In terms of this Policy, Personal Protective Equipment means all equipment or clothing
designed to be worn or held by a worker, specifically to protect them against identified
hazards or risks, and any addition or accessory designed to meet this objective.

6.2. A process must be developed and implemented that enables an assessment to be made
to determine which PPE is suitable to control the exposure of the employee to the hazard
being considered. This assessment would be in writing if the PPE is to be used in a high-
risk situation. The process must include the review of the assessment if it is suspected
that the previous assessment is no longer relevant or valid.

Some or all of the following may need to be considered in the risk assessment.
• The residual risks in the workplace,
• Is there a better way to mitigate the risks?
• The parts of the body which may be affected,
• The nature of the task,
• The degree of physical effort involved,
• Methods of work,
• Appropriate PPE must be acquired – Manufacturers recommendations must be
considered,
• How long PPE must be worn,
• Any special requirements e.g. ease of use when wearing spectacles or with other PPE.
• The health and other personal attributes of the worker.
• Fit of the PPE – Ergonomic factors and possible discomfort or loss of dexterity.

6.3.The process also needs to deal with the following:

 Information regarding the effectiveness and purpose of the PPE.
 Training of workers to use the PPE including their responsibility to properly ware the
items.
 Hygiene – cleaning and disinfecting.
 Issue and other records that need to be kept.
 The locating and display of signage.

6.4. The process must also include the appropriate storage and maintenance of PPE in
accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
