Re: Guidelines for SoE Industrial Training and Workshop Practice 2020/2021

At its Special Meeting held on Friday 1st June 2020, Senate agreed to adopt multiple tracks for conducting
Internship that can proceed whilst observing the Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) in place to curb
spread of the Coronavirus. Among the tracks adopted by Senate, the School of Engineering is currently
offering the following two (2) options to be conducted in a flexible manner:

Option A: Students with placements carry out industrial training while observing COVID-19 SoPs
• Students to indicate their IT placement and expected duration to Department IT Coordinator
• Students to be provided with copy of the Log Book to track their progress
• At conclusion of their IT, students will submit a report using the current guidelines for IT Reports.
• The IT marks will be aggregated from Employer Assessment and the student report.

Option B: Students participate in staff-led projects to undertake activities with clear deliverables.
• Students to submit a 2-3 page concept note on the project they plan to undertake including the
problem statement, proposed solution, methods of implementation, expected deliverables, and
relevance of project with respect to Uganda’s 2040 vision and the SDGs. Concept notes should be
endorsed by Makerere University faculty member prior to submission to Department IT
Coordinators.
• Concept notes will be assessed by Departments, who will also assign Academic Supervisors for the
approved concept notes.
• Students with approved projects will be provided with a copy of the Log Book to track their
progress
• At conclusion of their IT, students will submit a report using a format to be provided. The IT marks
will be aggregated from Field/Community Supervisor and the student report.

Students can only choose either Option A or Option B for their internship – and this is to be conducted for
a minimum cumulative period of 160 hours. They will be expected to complete their chosen option of
internship by 31st January 2022. All students who had deferred their IT 2019/2020 Industrial Training are
also advised to take up either of the options currently under offer.
