What I need to know?

The aim of the dance major is to develop students who are sensitive and articulate
physical and verbal communicators of the visual art of dance; who are proficient in the
analysis of dance in its cultural manifestations, leading them beyond knowledge of a culture
to an understanding and celebration of difference; and who are flexible, creative thinkers
able to perceive, examine and evaluate different points of view. Dancing is a physical
activity that is considered a "fitness level" because it was performed at a higher intensity
than your normal routine activity. Engaging in any physical activities is indeed a very vital
not only for the young ones but for everyone as well. Understanding the importance of
engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity is considerably great habit in achieving
good health and fitness, but it doesn’t end there. As you engaged in physical activities you
were able to meet and mingle with other people, making you more sociable hence, resulting
for your better social well- being. Planning an activity that would help an individual to be fit
and healthy is very essential and timely, especially nowadays that we are facing different
environmental, physical and health challenges. Challenges where we ourselves can make a
solution to be fit and healthy that can be the best weapon to fight diseases and other health
problems around us. In this module you, as Grade 12 students, are supposed to be well
versed in doing dancing for a target health issue or concern that you as an individual will
help to develop holistically.

LESSON I: What is Dance?

Dance is a performing art form consisting of
purposefully selected sequences of human
movement. This movement
has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is
acknowledged as dance by performers and
observers within a particular culture. Dance can be
categorized and described by its choreography, by
its repertoire of movements, or by its historical
period or place of origin.

Dancing is expressing one’s emotions through movement disciplined by rhythm.

Locomotor Movements refers to the movement of the body in space in any direction with
the feet as the moving base.

Non – Locomotor Movements refers to the movement of various part of the body in space
with a fixed base.

Why do people dance?

- It has been used in worships

- It plays a role in courtship
- it serves as a form of acquaintance for man and woman
- It is an expression of one's feeling
- As in old times, it brings magical power to people
- It brings victory or somehow restores health to life
- It serves to entertain others
- It gives beauty and inspiration to others
- It is used as whole body workout.

Rhythm
In the simplest terms, rhythm means being aware of the music that accompanies the
dance, and moving at the same speed as the music. In tap dancing, the dancer may make
sounds that mimic the rhythms of the musical accompaniment. More advanced dancers
may do contrasting rhythms, which is very interesting to listen to and more difficult.

Note: When an individual moves in response to a particular rhythm or music, we call the
movement as rhythmic movements or rhythms

What are phases of dance?

1. Folkdance / Ethnic Dance

A folk dance is a dance developed by
people that reflect the life of the people of a certain
country or region. Not all ethnic dances are folk
dances. For example, ritual dances or dances of
ritual origin are not considered to be folk dances.
Ritual dances are usually called "Religious
dances" because of their purpose. The terms
"ethnic" and "traditional" are used when it is
required to emphasize the cultural roots of the
dance. In this sense, nearly all folk dances are
ethnic ones. If some dances, such as polka, cross ethnic boundaries and even cross the
boundary between "folk" and "ballroom dance", ethnic differences are often considerable
enough to mention.

2. Social and Ballroom Dance

Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to
almost any recreational dance with a partner. However, with
the emergence of dance competition (now known as Dance
sport), two principal schools have emerged and the term is
used more narrowly to refer to the dances recognized by
those schools.

3. Recreational Dance
Recreational dance is just that - recreational. It is
for fun, maybe exercise, and is very open. There is little
structure, few rules, and participants do not necessarily
need to know how to dance or retain any information. It's
a great way to see if you like certain dance styles, blow
off some steam, or get a good workout. Common
examples are Zumba and other aerobic dance classes,
but you can take most genres recreationally.

4. Creative Dance
Creative Dance is a form of dance that combines
movement and artistic expression, without the requirement
of extensive training (Gilbert, 1992). Typically creative
dance focuses on the development of motor skills and
emotional expression as opposed to the more aesthetics
based focus of dance in a more traditional arts structured
setting (Dow, 2010). Creative dance allows for variation
amongst the skill level of its participants, affording
opportunities for those of any age and ability (Wang, 2004).
Creative dance has also been shown as an effective holistic
approach to promote movement development and improve
social and cognitive functioning amongst populations with
delayed or arrested social, cognitive, and physical abilities (Scharoun, 2014).

Note: Phase is a distinct period or stage in a series of events or a process of change or

development.

Who is Francisca Reyes Aquino?

Frances Reyes Aquino, the legendary "Mother of
Philippine Dancing," was born in Lolomboy, Bocaue, in the
Philippine Province of Bulacan, on March 9, 1899. She
was the eldest of three children of Filipe Reyes and
Juliana Santos Reyes of Manila. She obtained her High
School Teacher's Certificate in 1923 and her Bachelor of
Science in Education degree in 1924 from the University
of the Philippines. As early as 1921 to 1923, Francisca
began her search for folk dances to use in classes while a
Student Assistant in Physical Education. She traveled to
remote barrios (rural communities) in Central and
Northern Luzon. In 1924, she became an Assistant Instructor. She quickly saw that, with
further impact of Western culture, many dances would be lost or extensively modified.
She continued gathering folk dances, songs, and games for her master's thesis at
the University of the Philippines in 1926. She revised her work in 1927, and published it
as Philippine Folk Dances and Games. In this and later collections, the great diversity of
dance type, tempo, and music reflected a many-faceted Filipino character.

LESSON II: What is CONTEMPORARY DANCE?

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of
several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and
classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect
the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.
The term "contemporary" is somewhat misleading: it
describes a genre that developed during the mid-20th
century and is still very popular today. Contemporary
dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the
strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers
focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the
floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed
to many different styles of music.

Today's Contemporary Dance

Today's contemporary dance is an eclectic mix of styles, with choreographers
drawing from ballet, modern, and "post-modern" (structure less) forms of dance. While
some contemporary dancers create characters, theatrical events, or stories, others perform
entirely new creations as they improvise in their own unique style.

Contemporary Dance Techniques:

1. Release Technique - In dance, release technique is any of various dance

techniques that focus on breathing, muscle relaxation, anatomical considerations, and the
use of gravity and momentum to facilitate efficient movement. It can be found
in modern and postmodern dance, and has been influenced by the work of modern dance
pioneers, therapeutic movement techniques such as Feldenkrais and Alexander Technique,
and yoga and martial arts.
2. Body - Mind Centering - the basic inner peace of the body and mind. a good example is
doing yoga routines.
3. Contact Improvisation - in this technique, the dancers focuses in sensing a partner
while having a dramatic movement.
15

4. Flying Low - all the movements of the dancers has connections to the environment even
