That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war against a
far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of
greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices
and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost, jobs shed, businesses shuttered. Our
health care is too costly, our schools fail too many -- and each day brings further evidence that
the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable, but no
less profound, is a sapping of confidence across our land; a nagging fear that America's decline
is inevitable, that the next generation must lower its sights.
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are
many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this America: They will
be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over
conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false
promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our
politics. We remain a young nation. But in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside
childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history;
to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea passed on from generation to generation: the
God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full
measure of happiness.
(Extract from the president Barack Obama’s inaugural address)
Chủ đề 2:
1. Identify the features of written language in the following text, then comment on the
function of language.
2. Identify discourse reference used as cohesive devices in the text. The word gift is
used twice in the text. Identify its referent. Explain the role of co-text (linguistic
context) in understanding its referent.

I have always been convinced that if a woman once made up her mind to marry a man
nothing but instant flight could save him. Not always that; for once a friend of mine, seeing the
inevitable loom menacingly before him, took ship from a certain port (with a toothbrush for all his
luggage, so conscious was he of his danger and the necessity for immediate action) and spent a
year travelling round the world; but when, thinking himself safe (women are fickle, he said, and
in twelve months she will have forgotten all about me), he landed at the selfsame port the first
person he saw gaily waving to him from the quay was the little lady from whom he had fled. I have
only once known a man who in such circumstances managed to extricate himself. His name was
Roger Charing. He was no longer young when he fell in love with Ruth Barlow and he had had
sufficient experience to make him careful; but Ruth Barlow had a gift (or should I call it a quality?)
that renders most men defenseless, and it was this that dispossessed Roger of his common sense,
his prudence and his worldly wisdom. He went down like a row of nine bins. This was the gift of
pathos. Mrs. Barlow, for she was twice a widow, had splendid dark eyes and they were the most
moving I ever saw; they seemed to be ever on the point of filling with tears; they suggested that
the world was too much for her, and you felt that, poor dear, her sufferings had been more than
anyone should be asked to bear. If, like Roger Charing, you were a strong, hefty fellow with plenty
of money, it was almost inevitable that you should say to yourself: I must stand between the hazards
of life and this helpless little thing, or, how wonderful it would be to take the sadness out of those
big and lovely eyes! I gathered from Roger that everyone had treated Mrs. Barlow very badly. She
was apparently one of those unfortunate persons with whom nothing by any chance goes right. If
she married a husband, he beat her; if she employed a broker, he cheated her; if she engaged a
cook she drank. She never had a little lamb but it was sure to die.

(The Escape, William Somerset Maugham)

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration
for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed
the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to
millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a
joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the
Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One
hundred years later, the Negro still lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean
of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of
American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to
dramatize a shameful condition.

The Road Not Taken
(Robert F rost)
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

In the text below:
1. comment on the quality of the text in terms of cohesion & coherence.
2 analyze the function of language.

Some people believe that sharing details of research conducted in scientific, academic and
business domain is beneficial; however, some people have a different opinion that sharing the
specifics could disclose critical information. While sharing important information could open
doors to plagiarism, it can also provide a comprehensive understanding to the readers creating
enormous impact on their learning.
Sharing sensitive and critical information like references, statistical analysis freely can
lead to several implications in the research. The most common consequence is plagiarism. With
the details freely accessible, the fellow researchers can avail the opportunity of copying the content
from the research and branding it as their own research. This is most common in the PHD courses
where students copy the references from the research work of fellow students. However, this essay
disagrees with this viewpoint because not sharing all the information could leave readers
confused.
Sharing details provide complete understanding to the readers. In addition, it strengthens
the theses and provides solid foundation to the research work. Providing important information
like references and statistical analysis can help the reader to understand the conclusion of the
result in a better manner. For example, research on global warming is incomplete without a
statistical analysis of past and current carbon emissions data, supported by strong references. This
essay agrees with this viewpoint because research is incomplete without all the details.
To conclude, people believe that important research information should not be made freely
available due to plagiarism, on the other hand, some believe that important information should be
freely available to the readers to make them understand the full context. In my opinion, important
information should be shared for better understanding for the readers.
