PART 1: INTRODUCTORY NOTES Compound adjectives

A compound adjective is an adjective that contains two or more words often joined by a
hyphen.
There are many types of compound adjectives, categorized by the parts of speech of the first
element:
ADVERB:
• This is a brightly-lit room. / We live in a densely-populated city. (Adv + P2)
ADJECTIVE:
• It was a last-minute decision. / We watched the full-length version of the movie. (Adj +
N)
• That is an old-fashioned dress / Reptiles are cold-blooded creatures. (Adj + P2)
• She is a good-looking girl. / It left a long-lasting taste in my mouth. (Adj + P1)
Sometimes the first element is a numeral instead of an adjective:
• I have a three-week vacation / There was a five-second delay.
NOUN:
• We start using wind-powered generators to cut costs. / I love eating sun-dried raisins.

• I bought some mouth-watering strawberries. / That was a record-breaking jump. (N +
P1)
• She is a world-famous singer. / This is a smoke-free restaurant. (N + Adj)

In this unit, we focus only on this last category - compound adjectives initiated by a noun,
because it is more versatile and leaves translators more room for creativity, in the sense that
once they have worked out the rule of formation, they can easily guess or even coin a new
compound with certain confidence.

combination of poetry and music. Historically, this art form has often been compared to

Cold winter days are very conducive conditions for diseases to arise and develop, including low
