INTERNSHIP LEARNING OUTCOMES AND INSTRUCTIONS

OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP MODULE

The internship module aims to provide the student with:

1. A practice-oriented and ‘hands-on’ working experience in the real world or


industry, and to enhance the student’s learning experience.

2. An opportunity to develop a right work attitude, self-confidence, interpersonal


skills and ability to work as a team in a real organisational setting.

3. An opportunity to further develop and enhance operational, customer service and


other life-long knowledge and skills in a real world work environment.

4. Pre-employment training opportunities and an opportunity for the company or


organisation to assess the performance of the student and to offer the student an
employment opportunity after his/her graduation, if it deems fit.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this module, the student would:


1. Demonstrate the application of knowledge and skill sets acquired from the course and
workplace in the assigned job function/s;

2. Solve real life challenges in the workplace by analysing work environment and conditions, and
selecting appropriate skill sets acquired from the course;

3. Articulate career options by considering opportunities in company, sector, industry,


professional and educational advancement;

4. Communicate and collaborate effectively and appropriately with different professionals in the
work environment through written and oral means;

5. Exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skills by analysing underlying issue/s to
challenges;

6. Demonstrate the ability to harness resources by analysing challenges and considering


opportunities;

7. Recommend ideas to improve work effectiveness and efficiency by analysing challenges and
considering viable options;

8. Demonstrate appreciation and respect for diverse groups of professionals by engaging


harmoniously with different company stakeholders;

9. Exhibit professional ethics by displaying positive disposition during internship.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

1. Always be positive, flexible and adaptable to the organisational needs. No matter how
important or how insignificant you think your work is, it is part of your contribution to
the organisation.

2. Demonstrate a positive attitude in your work.

3. Go that extra mile to contribute more than what is expected or required. Try to add value
to your work assignments.

4. Do your best always – no matter what you do, what position you occupy, do the best you
can.

5. Adopt a good learning attitude. Be willing to learn in order to derive maximum benefit
from the attachment. Employers place a high premium on the ability to adapt and the
willingness to learn.

6. Maintain effective communication with your Company Supervisor and your School
Internship Mentor (SIM). Use telephone, email or any other appropriate means as required
to keep them posted on essential information.

7. Be a good team player and co-operate with your fellow employees and work harmoniously
together.

8. Discuss your weekly e-log and reflection submissions with your SIM during his/her visits.
Feedback promptly and highlight any areas of concern with your SIM.

9. Avoid taking excessive MCs, unless you are genuinely not well. Regular attendance is a
reflection of work attitude. Most companies or organisations also value healthy
employees.

10. Do not leave the work place without informing your Company Supervisor and obtaining
permission or approval.

NYP’S EXPECTATIONS OF YOU

1. Uphold the professional image of NYP by being a role model worker. Follow the
company’s dress code. Dress professionally to project a good image of yourself.

2. Comply strictly with the organisation’s rules, regulations, procedures and code of conduct.

3. Provide the best quality service of which you are capable of at all times.

4. Demonstrate good team spirit and be positive, adaptable and flexible.

5. Carry out your duties or responsibilities in a professional and courteous manner.

6. Integrity at work is very important. Keep the organisation’s business information, such as
customers, suppliers, financial research and development information strictly
confidential.

7. Obtain prior approval from your SIM and the Company Supervisor of the organisation if
you need to be absent from your workplace.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

1. Certificate of Participation

The certificate will be awarded to the student provided the student achieves:

a) An attendance rate of 100% during the placement period (excluding medical and other
emergency leave).

b) 50% overall passing mark or higher in the final assessment.

2. Absenteeism

The student is required to:

a) Alert the SIM and the Company Supervisor immediately about the absence.

b) Obtain approval from the SIM and the Company Supervisor in writing by submitting the
absence form, at least 3 days prior to his/her absence if the student is making a special request
for permission for leave of absence. (Note: Such leave of absence will only be granted under
exceptional circumstances)

c) Submit the original medical certificate, and other supporting documents to the Company
Supervisor, and copies to the SIM.

3. Assessment

The student will be assessed based on the following criteria:

4. Insurance

a) Internship students are covered by Group Personal Accident Insurance, Work Injury
Compensation, and Group Hospitalisation and Surgical Insurance,

b) In case of accidents, the student must inform the Company Supervisor and the SIM
immediately or as soon as possible.

c) Students who wish to take additional insurance coverage should make their own
arrangements.

5. Student Discipline

The following is a non-exhaustive list of the types of misconduct which can lead to disciplinary
action and/or the student’s removal from internship and failure in the module. (A student is deemed
to have failed the internship module, if he/she is removed from the Company)

a) Absence without official permission or poor punctuality and attendance records.

b) Misconduct e.g. smoking at the workplace, absence without approval, bad language,
insolence, offensive behaviour, insubordination, refusal to obey instructions, failure to
comply with the organisation’s safety rules.

c) Lack of professionalism at work.

d) Damaging of organisation’s property through carelessness or negligence.

e) Lack of integrity.

f) Failure to report to the assigned company or organisation assigned on the date of the
commencement of the attachment programme.

g) Any other reasons sufficiently serious to justify disciplinary action.
