(A) Period of Internship Programme
This is a 24-week (960 hours) internship programme. You may refer to the internship
confirmation email about your internship period.

(B) Objectives
This module enables students to put the knowledge and skills that they have acquired
from the course to practice. Students are attached to companies or organisations in
the industries relevant to their course of study. They will work on projects or fulfil
routine responsibilities that cater to the needs of these companies. Students will learn
to adapt to a real work environment and contribute to improvements in organisation
workflow.

Internship is an important component of your pre-employment training. This is when


and where your experience as an intern is greatly influenced and shaped by the mentor
assigned to you by the Company. This module enables you to experience the actual
working environment of the chemical industry. The objectives of the internship are to:

• Expose students and familiarize them to the daily working environment.


• Help students adjust to work life more effectively upon graduation.
• Help students acquire and boost essential technical and interpersonal
communication skills.

(C) Learning Outcomes


At the end of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the application of knowledge and skill sets acquired from the course
of study and workplace in the assigned job function(s).
2. Solve workplace challenges by analysing the work environment and conditions
and using appropriate skill sets acquired from course of study.
3. Articulate career options by considering opportunities in the company, sector,
and industry for professional and educational advancement.
4. Communicate and collaborate effectively and appropriately with different
professionals in the work environment through written and oral means.
5. Exhibit critical thinking and problem-solving skills by analysing underlying
issue(s) to challenges.
6. Demonstrate the ability to harness resources by analysing challenges and
considering opportunities.
7. Recommend ideas to improve work effectiveness and efficiency by analysing
challenges and considering viable options.
8. Demonstrate appreciation and respect for diverse groups of professionals by
engaging harmoniously with different company stakeholders (e.g. colleagues,
supervisors, suppliers etc.).

(D) Roles & Responsibilities of IS, IIM and SIM


Industry Supervisor (IS)

• Industry supervisor is the main person in the company who looks after the
internship of the students and ensures the internship programme is executed
as planned. He/she would assign tasks to the intern.

• Industry supervisor is usually the supervisor of the department in which the


student is being attached to. He/she would liaise with the diploma internship
coordinator and the SIM from NYP on the performance of the student.

Industry Internship Mentor (IIM)

• An experienced staff (in the Company) who shares his/her knowledge and
experiences, provides advice, support, and encouragement for the intern.

• The mentor may or may not be the supervisor/reporting officer for the intern. In
circumstances where the supervisor and mentor are different persons, the
industry supervisor’s role would usually be to oversee the intern’s performance
in the technical/ day-to-day aspects of the job, while the mentor takes on duties
such as career guidance and personal /professional development facilitation.

Student Internship Mentor (SIM)

• SIM is the NYP lecturer-in-charge who coordinates with the industrial


counterpart for matters related to the internship, including any problems faced
by the student during internship & incidents/ accidents occurring during your
internship at the company.

• The contact details of the SIM are indicated on the internship confirmation letter.
Each student should contact the SIM after the pre-internship briefing, to
understand the working culture and expectation of the company.

• SIM will visit student during their internship. Students should contact SIM
should they face any problem or have any enquiries.

(F) Rules & Regulations on Internship
Do’s during ITP / OITP

Students are expected to:

• Perform overtime or shift duties if required.

• Perform duties at worksites. Carry out duties similar to company staff.

• Wear working attire as instructed by company – strictly no Bermudas,


sleeveless / spaghetti-strapped tops & slippers.

• Work as a company staff member – be punctual and work diligently.

• Inform both company’s supervisor and NYP’s SIM (School Internship Mentor)
when on medical leave.

• Be sensitive and mature when interacting with your colleagues in the company.

• Have a positive attitude of your work. No matter how insignificant you think of
the task, it is part of the contribution to the company.

• Give the best effort. Take initiatives.

• Be adaptable and always willing to learn – employers place a high premium on


the ability to adapt and the willingness to learn.

• Take initiative and be proactive in looking out for learning opportunities within
the company. Help fellow colleagues in their work if schedule permits.

• Be cooperative and work harmoniously with your fellow colleagues. The joy in
our jobs is directly related to how well we work with others.

Don’ts during ITP / OITP

Students are reminded NOT to:

• Discuss with either company personnel or with fellow internship students


(Polytechnics and Universities) on internship allowance.

• Play any type of online or board games during working hours.

• Post photographs and comments of the workplace on any online social media.

• Use company’s equipment such as photocopier for personal use.

(G) Attendance
• Students must indicate attendance daily on the weekly work log.

• It is compulsory for students to complete the internship. Companies may grant


leave entitlements or benefits to students in accordance with their HR polices.

• Medical leave is considered as absent. Monthly allowance may be pro-rated


accordingly. Students must inform both their industry supervisors and SIM if
they are taking medical leave. Letters from parents will not be endorsed.

• You are not required to return to school for any activities.

• Lab coat, long pants/jeans, foot-covered shoes must be worn in the laboratories.

Student Activities During ITP Period

• Students should NOT be involving in any NYP/SAS/community/personal


activities during the office working hours.

• Students who are on internship need NOT come back for Director’s List award
ceremony.

• Students can only be excused from ITP for the special events below, however,
students must make arrangements with SIM and ITP coordinator to get school’s
approval by following the procedure below:

1) Obtain permission from IS first.


2) After permission is obtained, send an email to your SIM regarding this
request. E-mail should contain all the relevant information. Your SIM will
write to Management to seek approval.

➢ Representing Singapore (e.g. SEA games) at international events

Students will be excused to attend all training/rehearsal/performance/


marches. Official letter is to be submitted to industry supervisor and SIM.

➢ Representing NYP at national events

Students to be given 1 training/rehearsal day off and 1 day for actual


performance/match (total = 2 days). Official letter is to be submitted to
industry supervisor and SIM.

(H) Allowance during ITP Period
• Amount given depends on the discretion of the company, on a pro-rated basis.

• If no amount is stated in your confirmation letter, no allowance will be given to


the student.

• Allowance is given directly to the student.

• Students are not allowed to negotiate the rate of allowance with the company.

• The allowance may be exempted from CPF contributions.

• Students should allow company time to process the allowance.

(I) Working hours and Insurance during ITP


• You must follow the operating hours of the company.

• There is no protected time to do ITP weekly work log or report writing or to


prepare oral presentation during office hours.

• If you are required to stay back for overtime work, you may or may not be given
off-in-lieu or additional allowance. However, you should discuss with your SIM
if you feel unfairly exploited by the company.

• Each student is covered under the NYP Group Personal Accident Insurance
Policy.

Students on overseas internship programme (OITP)

• Students on OITP must get their travel insurance at own expense.

• Before leaving Singapore, all OITP students (Singaporeans) must complete the
online registration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

(J) Reporting Sick/Medical Leave
Students on the internship programme should comply with the following steps on
reporting sick.

• When a student is not well enough to report for work on a particular day, student
must firstly inform his/her respective Industry supervisor & SIM of his/her
intention to report sick for the day.

• Proceed to seek medical attention & treatment at the clinic.

• Upon knowing the outcome of the medical treatment on the number of days of
rest granted by the doctor, re-inform the Industry supervisor & SIM.

• If the doctor deems that the student is well enough to continue with work on that
day, re-inform the Industry supervisor & SIM that he/she will be making his/her
way back to the company.

• Upon resuming work with the company, submit the original medical certificate to
the Industry supervisor for verification.

• Email/WhatsApp the softcopy of MC to your SIM and attach the softcopy MC in


the weekly work log.

(K) Other information


• You must return company's access pass / keys once the internship is over. All
borrowed items from the company must be returned - books, standards, tools
etc.

• Students cannot request for the change of company assigned.

• Remember to take every task assigned to you as important.

• Absence from work without a valid reason is a potential reason for failing this
module and this may lead you to repeat the entire module.

• As companies are clustered in certain non-residential areas, students are


expected to commute a considerable distance to work.

(L) Assessment Plan
CLP322 ITP has 24 credit points (24 wks ITP). This is a graded module. The details of
assessment components are summarized as below.

# Oral presentation will be done either in physical (face-to-face) or zoom (online) mode, depending on
pandemic situation.

1. Bi-Weekly work logs & reflections


Students must record their daily internship activities using the bi-weekly work
log & reflection template given. The main purpose is to help students keep a
record of what they have done over the internship period on a regular basis, as
well as to internalise what they have learnt from both technical and non-
technical aspects. This bi-weekly assignment will be graded based on the
content, timeliness, reflection skills, and quality of writing.

2. E-Report
Students must submit an e-report through NYP LMS. The report will be
assessed based on the report organisation, content, quality of writing and
improvement/ insights on the internship.

3. Oral Presentation (around 10 min, followed by 5-10 min Q&A)


Students must give an oral presentation (with an aid of PowerPoint slides). The
presentation will be assessed based on the presentation organization &
content, presentation skills, and ability to answer questions. Deposit the e-copy
of your presentation slides on NYP LMS after the presentation if instructed by
ITP coordinator.

4. Supervisor’s Evaluation
There will be an evaluation form sent to the supervisor at the end of the
internship to evaluate the performance of the students. Students should show
good work ethics, professional proficiency, good quality of work, good
communication & teamwork, independent learning skills in order to score well
in the internship. Students should not contact the company to query on the
grading.

5. Online Module Feedback


Students must complete an online module feedback at the end of the semester.

Assessment Component 1: Bi-Weekly Work Logs & Reflections
The bi-weekly assignment consists of FOUR main components: (1) attendance, (2)
work goals, (3) summary of task, and (4) internship reflection.

Students are to reflect upon their internship experience using any NINE (9) of the
guiding questions and THREE (3) mandatory questions Nos. 9, 23 and 24 as shown
in the table below. You are also encouraged to make use of mainstream media like
ST Online, Today Online and channelnewsasia.com for your reflection. Due
recognition will be given for reflection that quotes and incorporates article(s) from
mainstream media, especially ST Online.

• For 24-week ITP, keep the report no more than 21 pages (~ 5000 words),

• Font type: Arial; Font size: 11; Paragraph: Single line spacing.

• Late submission of report will NOT be entertained.

Copying and Plagiarism:

• Students are also expected to write the report in their own words as the report will
be checked for copying and plagiarism.
o Single source < 10%, multiple sources <30%.

• Extensively copied or plagiarised reports will lead to failure of the entire internship
module.

Assessment Component 3: Oral Presentation


• Oral presentation will be done either in physical (face-to-face at NYP) or zoom
(online) mode, depending on pandemic situation.

• Each student is expected to speak for about 10 minutes (with the aid of PowerPoint
slides), followed by 5-10 minutes Q&A.

• The presentation should focus on the following THREE (3) components:

1. Introduction: Overview of company.

2. Training Assignments: Projects or contributions to the company.

3. Reflections on Internship: Technical & soft skills learnt during the internship;
challenges encountered during the internship, and how the challenges were
overcome.

• Wear neat, tidy and formal attire for the oral presentation.

• Deposit the e-copy of your presentation slides on NYP LMS right after the
presentation.
