Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Nature and Functions of the Social

Sciences!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or

facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum

while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

What I Need to Know

Hello, how are you today?

Welcome to Discipline in the Social Sciences ( DISS ). In this lesson, we will

differentiate the nature and functions of Social Science disciplines with the natural
sciences and humanities.

This subject is a more detailed lesson from your previous Araling Panlipunan

unlocked in this module.

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. define Social Sciences as the study of society (HUMSS_DIS11- IIIa-1);

2. distinguish Social and Natural Sciences and Humanities (HUMSS_DIS11-IIIa-2);

and

3. compare and contrast the various Social Science disciplines and their fields,
main areas of inquiry, and methods (HUMSS_DIS11- IIIb-d-3). (Department of

Lesson
Nature and Functions of the
1 Social Sciences

It is true that we, humans have been part of nature as much as we have been
part of the society.

On one hand, nature can be represented by an image of random and

unstructured forces that shape a given place. While unrestrained and ever dynamic,
such forces and events follow a process that we humans can investigate. For
instance, we can examine the formation of water vapour just as we examine the
rotation of the earth.

On the other hand, society is organized and structured by rules and laws
implemented by the people who composed the society themselves. It involves human
behaviours, pattern of activities, as well as decision making that take place in a
particular place. Nevertheless, we also can examine the different processes and
phenomena involved within the society.

8
What is It

In this lesson, we will help you understand the different disciplines of the
social sciences and how it is related to nature and humanities.

While the study of both nature and society involves us, humans, it can be
differentiated from one another. The investigation of nature is also known as the
natural sciences while the study of society is called the social sciences (Tatel Jr.
2016). Furthermore, both natural and social sciences are composed of varied
disciplines which we use to examine things happening around us.

Natural science is defined as a branch of science that deals with the physical
world. However, social science is defined as the scientific study of human society and
social relationship. Alternatively, humanities is defined as the study on how people
process and document the human experience (Tatel Jr. 2016). The following are the
major disciplines of social science.

ANTHROPOLOGY HISTORY POLITICAL SCIENCE

PSYCHOLOGY GEOGRAPHY
ECONOMICS

SOCIOLOGY LINGUISTICS DEMOGRAPHY

Anthropology is one of the disciplines of social science. It is the study of

humans in the past and in the present. There are three specific sub-disciplines of
anthropology: biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic
anthropology, and archaeology.

9
Economics seeks to understand people’s activities concerning production,
distribution and consumption of goods and services. There are two sub-disciplines
of economics: macroeconomics and microeconomics.

Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and involves an analysis of

language form, language meaning, and language in context. Morphology is study of
language form. Syntax is study of how words are being formed into a phrase.
Phonology is study of sounds of language.

Political Science deals with the systems of the government, and the analysis
of political activities, political thoughts and political behaviors.

10
Psychology is the study of behaviors and mental processes. There are four
main approaches in psychology: Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic, Behaviorism,
Cognitive, and Humanistic.

Sociology is the scientific study of society and human behaviour.

History is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. Events

occurring before written record are considered prehistory.

Demography is the study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the

incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations.

11
Geography is the study of the features of the earth and the location of living
things on the planet. It is divided into two main branches- the Physical Geography
and Human Geography.

Now that we have known the different discipline of social sciences, let us then
check how we can differentiate one from the others in terms of theirs fields, areas of
inquiry and methods used in examining social phenomena.

Anthropology focused on the human beings in both the biological and

cultural aspects. Anthropologists believed that culture is the most essential part of
society, which is then moulded by both the natural and the social environment.

Economics however, focused on quantitative analysis in examining the

behaviors within the society. Economists focused in understanding the allocation of
resources and how it affects the conditions in the society.

Alternatively, linguistics focused on how language, as an invention by people,

shapes the society itself. Linguists examine the how language as a way of
communication are changing along with the changes in the environment.

Political science on the other hand, focuses on how society is organized and
how it affects human life. Political scientists/analysts examine the relationships
within the society and how the leaders uphold power.

Psychology take a deeper look on individual psyche and how individual way
of thinking affects one’s behaviors and thus, relationships with the society.
Psychologists examine the human mind and how it affects our actions (Tatel Jr.
2016).

Sociology is a discipline close to Anthropology. While anthropologists focused

on how humans behave as an individual being, sociologists focused on examining
how humans behave as part of the social group (Tatel Jr. 2016). Meanwhile,
historians focused on the past and how it can shape decisions in the present.
Demography on one hand, utilized population as a unit to assess greater processes
with the society, such as migration. On the other hand, geography focused on

12
examining geographic locations and how it can determine the kind of society that
will be formed with such period of time.

With these various nature of the different disciplines of social sciences, means
to verify the information about the social phenomenon is necessary. Most of the
disciplines utilize subjective accounts in data gathering. However, relying mainly on
single set of data is not enough. Thus, other data such as biological accounts,
records, and physical evidences are utilized in interpreting subjective accounts. The
process is called “Triangulation Method”, in which three sources of similar data are
analysed for verification and validation (Tatel Jr. 2016).
