Scenario:

Tom Wilson is a West Coast founder of a high-end surfboard manufacturing company called Sun
City Boards. The company did well the first couple of years, but things haven’t been good for a while
now. They’re losing money, and Tom’s not sure how much longer they can keep the doors open. As
it turns out, Tom doesn’t have a business plan or basic financial statements. Throughout the course,
you will help Tom with his planning to keep his business running.

Reflect on the activities and inter-dynamics of the four functions in the context of Sun City
Boards.

Select the one function that you believe is most critical for Tom to address and develop a plan for
him to address this management gap prior to a 1:1 situation evaluation meeting.

Here the Sun City Boards (high-end surfboard maker) company owner Tom Wilson is seen
worrying about the company’s growth and development. He has been seeing less growth for the
company and even leading to worrying about closing the door of the company. So some of
the things that company here can opt for are:

1. Start with a business survey to judge the reasons for the decline in sales

2. Induce and start product sampling test for the consumers to know better need and
wants of the customer

3. To introduce lower-end surfboards too with the high-end, to capture more proportion of the
physical market.
4. To have competitive pricing for each product and compare it with the competition players
present in the market.

5. To introduce more variety with lower quantities produced surfboards to enjoy the tag of
‘limited produced’ goods and attract the eyes of the customers

6. Should focus on giving quality products and not compromise on pricing for a good high-
end surfboard

7. Should have proper marketing activities carried on to reach customers and always aim for
“Top of the mind” customer recall for the products

8. Can introduce customers with good offers for the product for selling higher quantities

9. Always maintaining good ‘after Sale services’ and proper relationship with the customers for
repeat sales

10. Reaching out to customers on a frequent basis to have good customer relations with the
company.

Maintaining and working on these points sincerely can help Sun City Boards to grow faster in the
market and offer healthy competition in the market and help secure self-position in the market
for the customers. I have compiled the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling together in
these points for better functioning of the company.

These functions are very closely related to each other and are implemented in the sequence. A
proper planning will help to organize your entire organization (including all the departments) and
help to identify the manpower who can lead the individual departments and report back to you.
This will help in providing a swift control on the manner the organization operates.
