Wurtz-Fittig Reaction

This is a variation of Wurtz reaction and is used for preparing homologues of

benzene by warming a mixture of an aryl halide and an alkyl halide with metallic
sodium in presence of dry ether.

Biphenyl and ethane are obtained as by products.

Ullmann Reaction

● When iodobenzene is heated with copper powder in a sealed tube, diphenyl is

produced and the reaction is known as Ullmann reaction.
[1997 - 1 Mark]
Fittig Reaction

This reaction is useful variation of Wurtz reaction. It involves the reaction between two
molecules of an aryl halide with sodium in the presence of dry ether to form a diaryl.

Elimination Reactions of Vic Dibromides

● It involves an antielimination of halogen atom

● Both are E2 elimination
● Both are stereospecific antielimination
Double dehydrohalogenation of gem or vic dihalide

The dehydrohalogenation occur in two steps, the first yielding a bromoalkene and the
second alkyne.
