How to measure the

volume of a liquid in
a measuring cylinder?
meniscus of the liquid is the upward or downward (only
happens in mercury) curve at the surface of a
liquid in a container.
Which one is the correct level?

Above of the curve 

Middle of the curve 
Bottom of the curve 

Units of volume used for liquids:
Steps to read the volume:
1. Check the numbers below and above the
meniscus. The volume is more than the lower
number and less than the upper number.
In this case, meniscus is between 60 and 70 ml.
2. Place your eyes perpendicular to the meniscus
and read the scale right at the bottom of it.
In this case, there are 10 smaller scales
between 60 and 70, showing 1 ml each. Count
from 60 and you’ll find it at 7th line.
3. Putting them together, and find the volume.
In this case, (60 + 7) = 67 ml
What volume of liquid is there in the cylinder below?

Meniscus is between 20 ml and 30 ml

10 lines between 22 and 30 = 1ml each
4 lines above 20 = 4 ml
20 + 4 = 24 ml
What volume of liquid is used in the apparatus below?

Meniscus is between 32 ml and 33 ml

10 lines between 32 and 33 = 0.1ml each
about 4 lines below 32 = 0.4 ml
32 + 0.4 = 32.4 ml
