Lesson 1:

Finds the volume of a given cube and

rectangular prism using cu. cm and cu. m
Review:
Width- of something is the
distance it measures from one
side or edge to the other.
Length –is a measure of how
long an object is or the
distance between two points.
Height–is the part that rises
or extends upward the
greatest distance:
The highest part.

Answer: There are 27 cubic units of sugar in the box.

The box is a rectangular prism. What is its volume?

height( 2 units)
width( 3 units)
Length ( 6 units)

6 rows of 3 cubes V=length X width X height

2 layers of 6 rows of 3 cubes =lXwXh
36 cubes in all =6X3X2
= 36 cubic units
Practice: Find each volume. Use the formula.

1.) 5 cm V =125 cm3

5 cm 5 cm

V=length X width X height

=lXwXh
= 5 cm X 5 cm X 5 cm
= 125 cm3
2.8 cm
2.) V =140 cm3
5 cm
10 cm

V=length X width X height

=lXwXh
= 10 cm X 5 cm X 2.8 cm
= 140 cm3
3 cm
3.) V =120 cm3
5 cm
8 cm

V=length X width X height

=lXwXh
= 8 cm X 5 cm X 3 cm
= 120 cm3
4.) V = 64 cm3

4 cm

V = s x s x s or s3
= 4 cm x 4 cm x 4 cm
= 64 cm3
5.) V = 3.375 cm3

1.5 cm

V= s x s x s or s 3
= 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm
= 3.375 cm3
Lesson 2:
Estimates and uses appropriate units of
measure for volume.
The appropriate unit to use when measuring volume
is based on the problem. For liquids that requires big
container, you use liters but for small containers or
small amount of liquids, use milliliters. However,
there are others units that are being used that we can
see everywhere such as cubic inches, cubic feet,
galloon, pint, quarter and many more.
1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters

Summary of the Lesson

The formula for the volume V of a cube of side s

is V= s x s x s.
The formula for the volume V of a rectangular
prism with length l, width w, and height h is V = l
x w x h or V = lwh.

Application:

Brenda has a 1 liter bottle of shampoo that is only

half-full. About how many milliliters of shampoo
does she have in the bottle?
1 Liter = 1000 mL Therefore, Brenda has 500
mL of shampoo in the
1 bottle.
Liter = 500 mL
