II. Concept Notes/Digest/Background information/Illustrative Examples

A rectangular prism (also called a cuboid) is a box-shaped solid object. It is a
three-dimensional shape with six faces that are rectangles. It is described by its length,
width, and height. If the length, width and height are equal, then it is called a cube.

Rectangluar Prism Cube

Volume is the amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional figure

measured in cubic units. The formula for finding the volume of rectangular prism is:
V = L x W x H (where L is the length, W is the width and H is the height)

To find the volume of a cube, we use the formula:

V = S3 (where S is the length of the side of the cube)
Illustrative Examples:
1. Find the volume of the rectangular prism below.

2. Compute for the volume of the cube below.

Solution:
4 cm S = 4 cm V = S3
V = (4 cm)3
V = 64 cm3

3. A family swimming pool 500 cm long, 300 cm wide and 150 cm deep. How many
liters of water is needed to fill the pool? (Use this conversion: 1000 cm 3 = 1 L)

150 cm

300 cm
500 cm

Solution: V=LxWxH
L = 500 cm V = 500 cm x 300 cm x 150 cm
W = 300 cm V = 22,500,000 cm3
H = 150 cm since 1 L = 1000 cm3, so it follows that
V = 22,500 L

Therefore, we need 22,500 liters of water to fill the swimming pool.

III. Activities/Exercises
A. Find the volume of the following prisms. Show your solutions in your answer
notebook.

1. 2. 3.

7 cm 4 mm
4 mm

B. Solve the following problems correctly. Show your solutions in your answer
notebook.
1. A carton of juice is 20 cm long, 16 cm wide and 10 cm tall. What is the
volume of the carton?
2. Tony built a rectangular garden pond 5 dm deep, 8 dm long and 4 dm
wide. How many liters of water is needed to fill his pond? (Use this
conversion:
1 dm3 = 1 L)

C. Reflection question:
1. Can different shapes of prisms have the same volume? Explain your
answer.

-
IV. Answers Key

A. 1. 960 in3
2. 343 cm3
3. 160 mm3

B. 1. 3200 cm3
2. 160 L
C. Yes.
Possible explanations:
- As long as we do not remove or add any material to it, changing its
shape does not alter its volume.
- These two prisms are of different shapes but have the same volume.
