Solids, liquids and gases – 1: Particle theory 1

1. a Liquid
liquid
b gas
c solid

.2. a

solid liquid gas

b i gas
ii solid
iii liquid

3. The table below describes the different ways in which the particles in a solid, liquid and
gas behave. Tick each box if you think the sentence is correct; put a cross if you think it is not:

solid liquid gas

Are arranged in an
  
orderly way
Always fill the
  
whole container
Are very far apart
and can be easily
  
squeezed into a
smaller volume

4. Read the sentences that follow and underline the correct word so that the sentences read
correctly:
We can pour out a liquid/solid because the particles are moving in a random
way and are free/not free to move far apart.
A crystal has a regular shape because the particles in a solid/gas are vibrating in
ordered/random positions and are free/not free to move far apart.
We can smell when dinner is ready because the particles in a gas/liquid are
moving and are free/not free to move far apart.
5. A physical change means that although a substance may change in appearance it is
possible to return it to its original appearance. Changes of state and making solutions are
examples of physical changes. The diagram below shows the physical changes, which can
affect water.

a. Fill the arrows with the following words to show changes in state: boiling, freezing,
condensation, melting.

melting boiling

Ice Water Water vapour

freezing condensation

b. Substances can be identified by their boiling and melting points.

i what is the boiling point of the water? 100℃
ii what is the freezing point of the water? 0℃
