Before-Reading Activities
1. Browse on the internet and find out the biography of Edgar Allan Poe!
Brief biography of Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809
and died in October 7, 1849. He was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary
critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of
mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in
the United States and of American literature as a whole, and he was one of the
country's earliest practitioners of the short story. He was an orphan.
2. How do you usually cope with stress in your daily life?
As I saw the biography of Edgar Allan Poe, his life was not easy. Has no
parents at a young age, it was difficult for me just thinking about it. And yet, in spite
of everything that happened he passed it, he fell, then he got up again, searching what
was good for him. I appreciate.
In my case, I do have my own problems and things need to be solved. I often
get stress, yet I tell myself it will pass. I will try my best to do it. and I will ask some
help from other sister if they can help me through. But, before asking them, I usually
try my best to fix first, and when I can’t at that time I will ask for help. I am a person
that don’t give up easily so, when the problem comes, it may affect my activities, but
still I talk to myself like this “it’s okay Yuliana, it will pass, tomorrow will be better”.
This is simple words but it helps me to deal with my anxiety.
While-Reading Activities
1. How does the narrator change over the years? Why do you think he becomes this
way?
The narrator has changed from a loving and caring person to be a murderous person
who became like evil. Killing his own pets and wife without guilty. He became like
that because of his mental illness/ disorder health, and alcoholic person those thing
made him lost his own self, in perverseness in fiendish.
2. How does the narrator feel about what he does to the cat?
He felt guilty, he knew that it was a sin, yet his intemperance was over his
guilt. Because of his addition to alcoholism.
3. What are the reasons the narrator gives for hanging Pluto?
The reason in the story itself, in my POV, I feel like, I am asking questions to
myself, that, those were really the reasons for him to hung Pluto. It seems like I don’t
believe if those are the reason. If I am not wrong the reasons were; because Pluto
loved him so he put him in that way, he felt no reason of offence.
4. What happens the night he hangs Pluto? Is this a coincidence?
It was fire in the whole house, the conflagration destroyed the building
completely. In my opinion, it was not coincidence, but an event which must be
happened, it’s like that was the price he need to pay for his own action as killing his
own pets.
5. What does the narrator do to his wife in the cellar? Explain how this happens and why
it happens?
His wife’s dead occurred, when she accompanied him going into the cellar,
and the cat followed them down in the stairs, the cat made him headlong and almost
fall down. Because of this he took his axe and going to kill the cat but, unfortunately
his wife caught it, then he became more insane, rage into demon he buried it in her
brain. In that way his wife died without a groan.
6. Does the narrator regret killing his wife? Explain your answer!
He neither regrets nor pity upon his dead wife’s. He lost totally his self. There
is no more human heart from him, in the opposite he became devil. He buried his wife
in the wall of their building and make sure that nobody would find it. I could say that
there is no moral etic for him. There is no guilt in him. This is really crazier; I would
never imagine this story end like this. But still going back to the story in the
beginning, the black cat is belief as another witches in superstition.
After-Reading Activities
1. Is this story relevant to you, and your life? Why or why not?
I may say it’s not relevant for me, because it’s too much for me to swallow and bear
it. I think, I couldn’t handle it. even though I know when someone has mental illness
or disorder health still, he can’t kill anyone as he likes. Because the can be treated. Its
not easy as to say but still person like that need accompany and care.
2. How do you feel about a cat is being killed by someone?
Of course, I feel pity and bad for the cat. Because the cat also like human, it can feel
the pain too. They have the right to live as well.
3. Does the narrator have internal conflict or problem in his mind and soul? Explain!
Yes. the narrator has problem in his body and soul. He has psychological illness and
physical illness. It because of his mental illness, and his toxic of alcoholism that made
him to be like that. To be a murder killing as a demon.
4. Does the story end the way you expected or it doesn’t? Explain your answer!
The ending of the story is out of my expectation; I didn’t expect to be that
way. I think it will end like; he will realize his wrong doing or sin for killing
his pets, but unexpectedly he even kills his own wife’s and hide the truth of
those things.
