Plate Exercise No. 5:

Alphabet of Lines
Introduction
As the basis of drawing is the line, a set of conventional symbols
covering all the lines needed for different purposes may properly be called an
alphabet of lines. The alphabet of lines adopted by the ANSI as applied to the
following:
1. Drawings made directly or traced in pencil on tracing paper or
pencil cloth, from which blueprints or other reproductions are to be made.
2. Tracings in ink on tracing cloth or tracing paper and inked drawings
on white paper for display.
The ANSI recommends three widths of lines for finished drawings:
thick for visible outlines and cutting-plane and short-break lines; medium for
hidden outlines; and thin for section, center, extension, dimension, long-break,
adjacent-part, alternate-position, and repeat lines.
In this activity, the students will draw the alphabet of lines in order to
be oriented and know the proper line-weight for specific line type and
applications.

Learning Outcomes

1. Be acquainted with “The Alphabet of Lines”.

Materials / Equipment

1. Drawing board
2. Drawing paper (A4)
3. Drawing pencils
4. Ink pen
5. Compass
6. Divider
9

7. T square
8. 45° and 30°-60° triangles
9. French curves
10. Pocketknife or pencil sharpener

12. Pencil eraser
13. Artgum or cleaning rubber
14. Scotch drafting tape or thumbtacks
15. Dusting cloth or brush
16. Protractor
17. Erasing shield

Procedure

1. Prepare the drawing instruments.

A. Clean or wipe the drawing instruments with dust cloth or

brush.
B. Fix the paper on drawing board and the drawing instruments
should be placed within easy reach.
C. Make margins or borders on paper as shown below:

All dimensions are in mm units.
