INTRODUCTION TO GLOBALIZATION

Global Experiences
We begin our definition of globalization with this
narrative to illustrate how concrete the phenomenon is. The
story (A Story: Gio and Latif) shows how globalization
operates at multiple, intersecting levels. The spread of Filipino
TV into Malaysia suggests how fast this popular culture has
proliferated and crisscrossed all over Asia.
The Model UN activity that Gio and Latif participated in
is an international competition about international politics.
Gio met Latif (a Malaysian involved in the Model UN) in
Sydney, a global city that derives its wealth and influence from
the global capital that flows through it. Sydney is also a
metropolis of families of international immigrants or
foreigners working in the industries that also sell their
products abroad. After the two had gone back to their home
countries, Gio and Latif kept in touch through Facebook, a
global social networking site that provides instantaneous
communication across countries and continents.

Some Description
Our discussion should begin with this intuitive sense that
something is happening, and it is not affecting everyone in the
same way. Gio’s story a very privileged way of experiencing
global flows, but for other people, he shrinking of the world not
be as exciting and edifying. For example, it is very common for
young women in developing countries to be recruited in the
internet as “mail- order brides” for foreign men living in other
countries. After being promised a good life once married to a
kind husband in a rich city, they end up becoming sexual and
domestic servants in foreign lands. Some were sold off by their
“husband” to gangs which run prostitute rings in these cities. Like
Gio, they too have experienced the shrinking of the world, albeit
negatively.
Because different people encounter globalization in a
variety of ways, it is deemed useful to ask simple questions like: “Is
globalization good or bad? It is beneficial or detrimental?” The
discussion begins with two premises. First
globalization is a complex phenomenon that occurs at multiple
levels. Second, it is an uneven process that affects people
differently.

Globalization: A working definition

The best scholarly description of globalization is provided by
Manfred Steger who describe the process as “the expansion and
intensification of social relations and consciousness across world-
time and across world-space.” Expansion refer to both “the creation
of new social networks and the multiplication of existing
connections that cut across traditional political, economic, cultural,
and geographic boundaries.” Intensification refers to the expansion,
stretching, and acceleration of these networks. Not only are global
connections multiplying, but they are also becoming more closely-
knit and expanding their reach
The final attribute of his definition relates to the way people
perceive time and space. Steger notes that “globalization processes
do not occur merely at an objective, material level but they also
involve the subjective plane of human consciousness.” In other
words, people begin to feed that the world has become a smaller
place and distance has collapsed from thousands of miles to just a
mouse-click away. One can now e-mail a friend in another country
and get a reply instantaneously, and as a result, begins to perceive
their distance as a less consequential. Cable TV and the internet has
also exposed one to news from across the globe, so now, he/she
has this greater sense of what is happening on other places.

Conclusion: Globalization from the Ground Up

All this talk of large, intersecting processes may be
confusing. Indeed, it may be hard to asses’ globalization or
comment on it because it is so diffuse and almost fleeting.
For anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, different kinds of
globalization occur on multiple and intersecting dimensions
of integration that he calls “scapes.” An “ethnoscape,” for
example, refers to the global movement of people, while a
“mediascape” is about the flow of culture. A “technoscape”
refers to the circulation of the mechanical goods and
software; a “financescape” denotes the global circulation of
money; and an “ideoscapes” is the realm where political
ideas move around. Although they intersect, these various
scapes have differing logics. They are thus distinct windows
into the broader phenomenon of globalization.
Appadurai’s argument is simple: there are multiple
globalizations. Hence, even if one does not agree that
globalization can be divided into five “scapes,” it is hard to
deny Appadurai’s central thrust of viewing globalization
through various lenses.

SUMMARY OF THE LESSON

Why do we need to study the world? At first glance, the world as

a concept is abstract. After all, all your daily experiences are considered
interactions with your country. When you read the news, you read
about the Philippines. When you engage in an official transaction like
paying yourtaxes, you deal with the Philippines government, almost all
of your classmates and teachers are Filipinos.
However, you only need to step back a little bit to see that the
world “out there” is already here. For example, you likely have relatives
who are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Every time these relatives
visit or send something home, they are bringing part of the world with
them. Even if you have not traveled outside the Philippines, you have
likely heard stories about foreign countries from these family members.
Some relatives might have pictures of San Francisco’s Golden Gate
Bridge. Others may have described the lights and towering building of
Shinjuku.
Needless to say, the media and the internet are also your
windows to the contemporary world. You watch American movies and
can probably sing at least K-Pop song. If a major political event occurs,
you don’t need to go to CNN.com to find out more details; friends are
already posting articles on Facebook.
Finally, your consumption habits are global. You have dined in a
McDonald’s, ridden in a Japanese car, maybe owned a Korean mobile
phone, and eaten Australian beef.
You are already a citizen of the world whether you are aware of it
or not. Just by living your life, you automatically think about the
contemporary world.

NATURE OF GLOBALIZATION

GLOBALIZATION AND ITS EFFECTS TO WORLD POLITICS

According to Manfred Steger (2014), “Globalization refers to
the expansion and intensification of social relations and
consciousness across world-time and world-space.” With this
definition, one can look at globalization form different lenses and
different point of views. Hence, when globalization talks about the
increase of social relations and consciousness across timelines and
borders, the political scientist would likely see globalization’s great
potential to challenge the nation state. The emergence of
Transnational Corporations (TNCs) and Multinational Corporations
(MNCs), have in a way, influenced many state’s policies in relation
to the particular state’s political policies. Hence, the power and
influence of these foreign corporations have greatly influenced the
aspect how state have been governed.
This is certainly a great challenge to independent states.
Hence, states formed themselves into an association of states for
the past decades so that they could address together with their
political, economic, and even social issues. This is seen as rise of the
strength of regional blocks. For the countries located along the
West Philippine Sea, the Association of South East Asia Nations
(ASEAN) was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok by the five-
original member-countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand.

NATURE OF GLOBALIZATION

The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and purposes of the
association are:
1.To accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural
development in the region through joint endeavors in the of
equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a
prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asia nations, and
2.To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect
for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries
in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nation
Charter.

GLOBALIZATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON ECONOMICS

Globalization has also great effects in the realms of economics.
For one, it greatly increased free trade. The rise of regional blocks all
over the world lead to facilitate easy trade relations among member-
states of regional block since of the objectives of such organization is
to promote economic prosperity. In the 1990s, regional blocks became
a craze in the sedate world of economics and Free Trade Agreements
(FTAs) have played a role towards the trend of regional integration.
FTAs essentially remove trade barriers such as tariffs and import
quotas among member-states of regional blocks (Urata, 2002). This
makes trading among regional blocks member-state easy. Not only
that, it is also favorable for the business sector since trade for them,
not only in their home states but also in their neighboring states, has
become friendlier than in the previous years or decades.

GLOBALIZATION IN RELATION TO CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION

Globalization has greatly changed how people live. It

changed the way people communicate to each other since they
have been empowered to communicate fast even if they are
thousands miles away from each other. This also manifests that
people’s culture has been affected by globalization as manifested
how people live. People have behave differently now compared
to the past. Globalization has also affected the changed people’s
needs, desires, and even their wants. As with every form of
globalization, one ought to consider both the emergence of
global cultural system on societies and on individuals as well as
the institutions within them (Chirico, 2014).

Module in Contemporary World 33

10 by Dela Torre, R.
LEARNING PLAN

ABSTRACTION

Moreover, improvements in the realm of communication

accelerates the flow of ideas and information. Culture flows through the
worldwide web, changing people’s ideas, influencing their imaginings
about each other and the other parts of the world. Families separated by
migration maintain connections to one another through wireless media
and frequent travel while new communications media allow people to
gather spontaneously (Chirico, 2014).
With this, it is already apparent that technology is “shrinking the
world” of the present generation. People, in one way or another, are
going into a direction in which they act in concert and cohort creating
the conditions through which many of them imagine themselves as part
of one world- a global imaginary, which Marshal McLuhan (1962) called
the global village.

VARIOUS FORMS OF CONNECTIVITY BROUGHT ABOUT BY GLOBALIZATION

There are various forms of connectivity that have been brought about by
globalization.
• Connectivity in economy- in the sense that when the West
experiences financial crisis in their homeland, a large number of
other countries would also be affected with this crisis.
• Connectivity in music industry- an example of this is the
popularity of Psy, triggered by his pop song. Gangnam Style,
when it generated 1 billion views on YouTube in 2012.
• Connectivity in politics- a recent manifestation of this was the Arab
Spring, a series of anti-government protests, uprisings and armed
rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011.

With all the connectivity’s mentioned, it is also discernible that most, if

not, all of them are triggered by various factors, pressures, the media, etc.
Yet, one has to take note that the effects of the degrees of
interconnection are uneven and unequal. Globalization is a process, and
in a process, effects are more often than not, not uniform and mostly
unequal.

EXPANSION AND STRETCHING OF SOCIAL RELATIONS

Globalization has stretched and expanded relationship among
nations and even among people in the course of the years. One of the
agents for expanding such relationship is the emergence of non-
government organization (NGOs). These organizations are mostly aid
groups whose main objective is to alleviate the lives of people especially
those in distress. One good example of this was when Leyte was hit by the
most powerful storm to ever make landfall in recent history- Typhoon
Haiyan- 2013. The province became like a ground zero after the landfall
where in Philippine government was not able to respond quickly.
Yet despite the said short coming, NGOs converged in Tacloban City
for the main purpose of helping them, also to rebuild their lives. These
forms of relationship have not started from personal connections but said
organizations have come faraway places to give help where it is needed
the most.

INTENSIFICATION AND ACCELERATION OF SOCIAL EXCHANGES

AND ACTIVITY
In most part of the contemporary world, social exchanges and
activities have already been intensified and accelerated through the
advancement of communications and transportation technology. Years
back, it would take time for the recipient of a letter to receive it even if
the sender lived not very far. At present, everything has change.

Communication can be sent in a split of a second and is readily

available at the tip of the finger of the sender. Once recent innovation that
influences a large number of the present generation is the social media. It
makes people connected since it serves to facilitate split second transfer
of information or communication from one person to another. People far
from each other may feel that they belong to the same community since
social media have made it possible for the people to be perpetually
connected with each other. Quick travel is already accessible to a greater
number of people.

Though some people find expensive, the thing is it is already readily

available to anyone who has a capacity to do so. Live television and even
social media live streaming enable people far from each other to fully be
aware of what is happening around them. With all these present in the
contemporary society, McLuhan (1964), after all, has predicted that
globalization would reduce the wide world into a smaller global village

SUMMARY OF THE LESSON

International economic integration is a central tenet of

globalization. In fact, it is also so crucial to the process that
many writers and commentators confuse this integration for
the entirety of globalization. As a reminder, economics is just
one window into the phenomenon of globalization; it is not the
entire things.
Nevertheless, much of globalization is anchored on
changes in the economy. Global culture, for example, is
facilitated by trade. Filipinos would not be as aware of
American movies, listen to their music, and consume their
product. The globalization of politics is likewise largely
contingent on trade relations. These days, many events of
foreign affairs are conducted to cement trading relations
between and among states.
Given the stakes involved in economic globalization, it is
perennially important to ask how this system can be made
more just. Although some elements of global free trade can be
scaled back, policies cannot do away with it as a whole.
International policymakers, therefore, should strive to think of
ways to make trading deals fairer. Government must also
continue to devise ways of cushioning the most damaging
effects of economic globalization, while ensuring that its
benefits accrue for everyone.
