Lesson Discussion:

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER

 It is a machine
 Electronic
 Automatic
 Digital
 Manipulate data
 Logic formulations – Programming (C+C++/JAVA)
Name : ______________________` Grade/Section: ____________
Name of Teacher : ______________________

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER

 Speed
 Reliability
 Storage capability

COMPUTER CAPABILITIES

 Ability to perform certain logic operations (CODES)

 Ability to provide new time dimensions
 Ability to store and retrieve information
 Ability to control errors
 Ability to Check Itself

COMPUTER LIMITATION

 Dependence on prepared instruction

 Inability to derive meanings from object

DATA PROCESSING

Is the manipulation of data into a more useful form? It is a modern name for paperwork and
involves the collecting, processing, and distributing of facts and figures to achieve a desired result.

Computer data

- is information processed or stored by a computer. This information may be in the form of

text documents, images, audio clips, software programs, or other types of data.

Data – is defined as any collection of facts and form into useful INFORMATION. Data can be
defined as a representation of facts, concepts, or instructions in a formalized manner, which
should be suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing by human or electronic
machine.

Data is represented with the help of characters such as alphabets (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9) or special
characters (+,-,/,*,<,>,= etc.)

Information is organized or classified data, which has some meaningful values for the receiver.
Information is the processed data on which decisions and actions are based.
For the decision to be meaningful, the processed data must qualify for the following characteristics −
 Timely − Information should be available when required.
 Accuracy − Information should be accurate.
 Completeness − Information should be complete.

DATA PROCESSING CYCLES

Four function of Computer System

1. Input
2. Processing
3. Output
4. Storage (Primary or secondary)

Name of Teacher : ______________________

2 KINDS OF DATA PROCESSING

1. MDP – Mechanical data processing

- use a combination of manual procedures and mechanical equipment

- example: Typewriter

2. EDP- Electronic data processing

- the machine is electronic digital computer

- simply known as automatic data processing
- example: PC, Laptops, Phone

Advantages of Electronic data processing

1. Speed
2. Accuracy
3. Automatic operations
4. Decision making capability
5. Compact storage
6. Discipline it imposes

DATA PROCESSING OPERATIONS

1. Recording
2. Verifying
3. Duplicating
4. Classifying
5. Sorting
6. Calculating
7. Summarizing
8. Merging
9. Reporting
10. Feedback
11. Retrieving

METHODS OF DATA PROCESSING

o Batch Processing
is a technique in which data to be processed or programs to be executed?
o On line Processing
Refers to equipment or devices under the direct control of the central processing unit.
o Real time processing
is a method of data processing which has the capability of a fast response to obtain
data from an activity or a physical process?
o Distributed Processing
the most complex level of computer processing distributed processing consists of
terminals linked to a large central computer system.

Key Terms:

Computer data - may be processed by the computer's CPU and is stored in files and
folders on the computer's hard disk.

Data processing -is, generally, "the collection and manipulation of items of data to
produce meaningful information

Data collection- is the process of gathering and measuring information on targeted

variables in an established system
Name : ______________________` Grade/Section: ____________
Name of Teacher : ______________________

Information processing- is the change (processing) of information in any manner

detectable by an observer

Questions:

1. What are the differences between Data Computer and Information?

2. Why Computer Sometimes fail?

3. Give at least (3) limitations of Computer System and explain.

4. Give at least (3) characteristics of Computer machines.

Learning Activity:

Instructions: Find the words on computer system on Cross word Puzzle.

Lesson Summary:

A computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or

logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability
to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers
to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.

Self-Evaluation:

Evaluate your current skills against the criteria listed below. Check the option that you
think is most appropriate to you.

Skills Weak Fair Good Very

Good
1. Understand the difference between data and
Information
2. Analyze the characteristics of Computer System
3. Identify the different function of data Processing
