Lesson Discussion:

What is Computer Machine

Computer is an electronic hardware device that operates and functions under the control of instructions
in its memory called Programs. People use computers to do certain tasks and attain certain objectives. A
computer cannot work on its own. It needs people to operate. A computer works like a human brain. Like the
brain, the computer needs information to work. The information entered into the computer is called data.
Computer is also a programmable that follows a set of instructions so that it may be able to manipulate or work
on data and provide useful information/ capable for performing complex computations in a short time. It also
powerful tools for creating communications, personal interest, business, educations. Charles Babbage is
considered as a father or modern computer system.

Information Technology- refers to the collection of tools that make it easier to use, create, manage,
and exchange information. It is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store,
retrieve, transmit and manipulate data. The basis of the now generations of “Information technology” a source
we call the computer. Technology Devices ( example; ATM, Biometrics, MRT and LRT machines)

Information System – Combines information technology, people, data to support business

requirements

Computer can receive and accept data. The

data is then processed using a program set by the
user. Some examples of data can be entered into the
computer are text, pictures, images, sounds and
videos. The computer processes these data and then
produces an output that can be used by the user.

Computers All Around Us

- Computer are found in schools and homes. Students use computers to do their assignments, do
research, play games or talk to relatives and friends through the internet
- Teachers use computers to teach the students in a better and faster way. They can use videos and
pictures to present the topics for faster and better learning process.
- Scientists use computer to invent new things such as medicine and ways to improve life. They
record their research in the computer and see the results faster. Mathematicians solve complex
problems with the use of super-fast computers
- Computer are found in airports and in airplane. Pilots use computer to fly and land the airplane
safely.
- Computers are found in groceries and stores. Cashiers use computers to record the prices and
quantities of goods. They can also determine how many goods were sold.
- Computer are found in business, office workers, secretaries and accountants use to the computer to
type different documents such as letters, monitor sales or business plans.
- Computer found in the hospitals. Doctors use computer to treat and diagnose the illness of their
patients. They store in the computer the medical records of the patients.
- Engineers use computers to design cars and machines for accuracy and safety. Architects use
computer to design buildings and house.
- Computer are used to talk and see relatives and friends. Computers are used to send letters,
pictures, videos, music.
- Computer are found in TV Stations and movie outfits.
- Animators use computers to create cartoon characters.
- Computers at home are also used by the children or students to play games, research homework’s.
Listen to music and watch movies.
- Computers are found in the government offices. They use computers to record the data of people.

Advantages of Using Computer

1. Speed- Computer operates on data and commands at incredibly fast speed. in once second, billions
or trillions or operations are done by the computer
2. Storage- Computer can store enormous amount of data and information in its memory. This
information can be easily transferred and used anytime
3. Reliability- Computers are made of modern technology, they can operate continuously the whole
day. If the computer breaks down. It can easily be repaired.
4. Communicate- People can connect with others by the use of computers. Computers have made it
possible for people to talk, and see each other over the internet.

Disadvantages of Using Computer

1. Privacy- People have to be careful in sharing photos and information on the internet. There are
some people with bad intention that may use your information
2. Health risks- Long and improper use of the computer can lead to pain or injury. It can affect your
eyes , hands, wrists, neck and back.
3. Environment- old computers must be dispose properly. Computer parts may release toxic or
dangerous materials. Heat generated by the computer may add to the global warming.
4. Use of power- Computer needs electricity to run. Even though computer consumes only little
electricity, with may computers around it will result to high electricity usage.

Elements of a Computer System

1. People-People are the most important element of a computer system. They run and operate the
computer. the personnel involved in systems analysis, programming, computer operations, system
maintenance.
o Technical user (programmer, system Analyst, data Encoder, information Tech)
o Non-Technical user

Name of Teacher : ______________________

2. Procedure-Procedures are the step by step instructions to follow when using hardware, software
and data. The procedures are normally written in manuals of hardware and software manufactures.
3. Software-Software are programs or instructions that a computer must follow to do its task. The
purpose of software is to process data into useful information for people.

4. Hardware- Hardware is the physical equipment that you can feel and touch. Examples of hardware
are CPU, mouse, keyboard, printer, speaker and monitor

Key Terms:

Computer- a programmable that follows a set of instructions so that it may be able to

manipulate or work on data and provide useful information/ capable for performing complex
computations in a short time

People ware (User) - the personnel involved in systems analysis, programming, computer
operations, system maintenance

Questions:

1. How often do you use computers?

2. Do computers make life easier?

Learning Activity:

Instructions: Find the words on computer system on the words search puzzle. Color the
words that you can find and write them below.

Lesson Summary:

A computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or

logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability
to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers
to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.

Self-Evaluation:

Evaluate your current skills against the criteria listed below. Check the option that you
think is most appropriate to you.

Skills Weak Fair Good Very
