Lesson Discussion:

Classification of Computers | Type of Computer

Computers differ based on their data

processing abilities. They are classified
according to purpose, data handling and
functionality. According to purpose,
computers are either general purpose or
specific purpose. General purpose
computers are designed to perform a
range of tasks. They have the ability to store
numerous programs, but lack in speed and efficiency. Specific purpose computers are
designed to handle a specific
problem or to perform a specific
task.

A set of instructions is built into the

machine According to data
handling, computers are analog,
digital or hybrid. Analog computers
work on the principle of measuring,
in which the measurements
obtained are translated into data.

. Digital computers are those that operate with information, numerical or otherwise,

represented in a digital form. Such computers process data into a digital value (in 0s and 1s).
They give the results with more accuracy and at a faster rate. Hybrid computers incorporate
the measuring feature of an analog computer and counting feature of a digital computer. For
computational purposes, these computers use analog components and for storage, digital
memories are used.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF COMPUTERS

1. According to Purpose

General Purpose

- These computers have the capability to do a variety of tasks depending on the type
of program or software that are provided. They have the ability to store numerous
programs, but lack in speed and efficiency.

Example (Personal computers)

Specific Purpose

- Specific purpose computers are designed to handle a specific

problem or to perform a specific task. A set of instructions is built into the machine.

Example ( ATM machines, Biometrics)

May program sa loob kaya specific

2. According to type of Processing

Analog computers - these are used for scientific, engineering,

and process and control purposes.

Digital computers - (Machine that specialize in

counting (calculator)

Hybrid computers (Machines that combine analog and digital)

3. According to Capacity

Minicomputers – It is a midsize multi-processing system capable of supporting up to

250 users simultaneously. (Computer Laboratory, Office)
Name : ______________________` Grade/Section: ____________
Name of Teacher : ______________________

Microcomputer

- is a small, relatively inexpensive computer with a microprocessor as its central

processing unit. Example; (CCTV and Spy Camera)

Mainframe

- is very large in size and is an expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds

or even thousands of users simultaneously. Mainframe executes many programs
concurrently and supports many simultaneous executions of programs.

- can process millions of instructions per second. examples (TV station, Pagasa,
Philvocs) - SATCOM

Supercomputers

- one of the fastest computers currently available. Supercomputers are very

expensive and are employed for specialized applications that require immense
amount of mathematical calculations (number crunching). For example, weather
forecasting, scientific simulations, (animated) graphics, fluid dynamic calculations,
nuclear energy research, electronic design, and analysis of geological data (e.g. in
petrochemical prospecting).
- can process billions of instructions per second. Example (Satellite computers)

Workstation

- is a computer used for engineering applications (CAD/CAM), desktop publishing,

software development, and other such types of applications which require a
moderate amount of computing power and relatively high quality graphics
capabilities.

4. According to Size

PDA

- (Personal Digital Assistant) - is a term for a small, mobile, handheld device that
provides computing and information - storage and retrieval capabilities for personal
or business use, often for keeping schedules, calendars and address book
information handy.

Net book

- is a generic name given to a category of small, lightweight, legacy-free, and

inexpensive laptop computers that were introduced in 2007? Netbooks compete in
the same market segment as mobiles and Chromebooks.

Tablet

- commonly shortened to tablet, is a mobile device, typically with a mobile operating

system and touchscreen display processing circuitry, and a rechargeable battery in
a single, thin and flat package
- wireless, portable, pc with a touch screen interface.

Laptop

- A small portable computer that it can sit on your lap. It is more frequently called
notebook computer.
- often called a notebook, is a small, portable personal computer with a "clamshell"
form factor, typically having a thin LCD or LED computer screen

Name of Teacher : ______________________

PC/Desktop Computers

- is a personal computer designed for regular use at a single location on or near a

desk or table due to its size and power requirements?
- PCs are based on the microprocessor technology that enables manufacturers to put
an entire CPU on one chip. Businesses use personal computers for word
processing, accounting, desktop publishing, and for running spreadsheet and
database management applications. At home, the most popular use for personal
computers is playing games and surfing the Internet.
- Although personal computers are designed as single-user systems, these systems
are normally linked together to form a network.

Smartphones

- Do you own a smartphone? Your smart phone is a computer! Most smartphones

run iOS or Android. Android is an operating system that is based on Linux.
Smartphones are becoming exponentially faster and also have an exponentially
increasing data capacity. These two devices have many limitations such as
processing power, memory, energy usage and screen size.

Key Terms:

Workstation- It is also a single user computer system, similar to personal computer

however has a more powerful microprocessor.

Main Frame- It is a multi-user computer system, capable of supporting hundreds of

users simultaneously. Software technology is different from minicomputer.

Questions:

1. Which type of computer is mostly used for automatic operations? why?

2. Which is faster analog or digital computer?

Lesson Summary:

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the

ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer
to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit
or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.
