This page is about word formation patterns, prefixes and suffixes. Read the information
on this page and do the exercises.

Sentence Patterns Examples

S (subject) V (verb) Dogs sleep.

S (subject) V (verb) O (Object) Dogs eat meat.

Subjects and objects are nouns (N). You can have a / an / the / my (possessive
adjectives) and adjectives (adj) with subjects and objects. After a / an / the / my
(possessive adjectives), there is always a noun.

S (the adj N) V O (my N). The hungry dog eats my meat.

S (adj N) V. Hungry babies cry.

S (N) V O (adj N). People watch scary films.

Verbs come after subjects. In SVO sentences, verbs are always after helping verbs and
modal verbs such as don’t, didn’t, be going to, be likely to, will, might, could, must,
have to, should, would, can, used to.

S V (don’t V) O (the N) I don’t know the answer.

S V (should V) O (your N) You should do your homework.

S V (will V) O (N) I will sing “I will always love you”.

S V (be likely to) O (N) Linda is likely to win the race.

S V (used to) O (N) Bob used to live with his parents.

After “copular verbs” (CV) such as be, look, feel, taste, smell, sound, you should use
an adjective if there is not a noun:

a. That sounds good.

b. The food tastes disgusting.

c. He looks happy.

Adverbs (adv) come at the end of the sentence, before the sentence, after the verb or
sometimes between the subject and the verb. Adverbs can qualify/modify a verb, an
adverb, or an adjective.

a. The dog ate the delicious food slowly.

b. Slowly, the dog ate the delicious food.

c. The dog slowly ate the delicious food.

d. My cat is incredibly happy to have his dinner.

e. My dog can run unusually quickly when she’s chasing a cat.

Prefixes

un-, in-, im-, ir- and dis- are prefixes. They give a negative meaning to adjectives:
unreliable, inescapable, impolite, irregular, dishonest.

Suffixes

-er Person Noun

-er comes at the end of a verb and often makes a person noun: teacher, attacker,
organiser.

-ly Adverb Ending

-ly always makes the word an adverb: nicely, argumentatively, reliably.

-ment, –tion, -edge, -hood and –ence / -ance Noun Endings

WORD FORMATION EXERCISES

These suffixes come after verbs and make them nouns: argument, communication,
inheritance, neighbourhood, knowledge.

-able / -ible, -ive, -ed, and -ing Adjective Endings

-able / -ible make the verb an adjective. This adjective is about ability, something you
can do. For example, “He is reliable” (so you can rely on him). “She is sensible, so she
can make good choices about her life.”

The suffix –ive generally describes a function or a condition: “This weapon is quite
destructive.”

We use –ed and –ing adjectives to describe feelings/features: “They are interesting.” “I
am interested in sports.”
