1.0 OBJECTIVE

1.1 This document provides instructions on the proper removal of the Backup
Wrench (BUW) Assembly on a topdrive, the hazards involved, and a list of the
equipment and tools necessary to do so.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This document provides a step by step procedure for properly removing the
backup wrench (BUW) assembly on a topdrive. This document assumes that the
reader has basic mechanical, electrical and hydraulic knowledge and proper
training on how to use the test equipment and tools listed. This document
assumes that the reader is familiar with rigging techniques, using chain falls,
chokers, cables, and other rigging equipment. This document also assumes that
the reader has already performed the necessary troubleshooting steps to isolate
the backup wrench problem to a failure of the backup wrench necessitating their
replacement. Additional information can be found in the product manual or
obtained from the product support staff at Rigline. Safety considerations are
provided. However, a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and any other safety measures,
such as a harness inspection, and an inventory of all tools and materials being
brought up to the topdrive must be performed prior to the start of the task. It
should be noted by the reader that this document will not cover any of the
troubleshooting steps necessary to isolate the problem to that of the backup
wrench (BUW).

2.2 Duration of Task

2.2.1 An estimated duration for this task has been provided below. The minimum
duration assumes that environmental and equipment conditions are ideal, and all
tools and equipment necessary to complete the task are available. Duration of
this procedure may vary depending on the location in which the task is being
performed (rig, shop, yard, office), and the technician’s knowledge and

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 Preparation
5.1.1 Before beginning the job, ensure the following are adhered to:
5.1.1.1 Work will be performed of a ladder and with tools at height. Make sure fall
protection is used, use secondary fall protection and strain relief.
5.1.1.2 Use tethering kit for all tools that are used in this process. It will be assumed
from here on out that tethers are used on all tools that are not otherwise in a
bag or other secure location.
5.1.1.3 Complete the appropriate work and rig equipment permits before starting the
procedure.
5.1.1.4 Due to the work at height while suspended and the use of overhead hoisting
equipment, attention must be paid to the weather, specifically the wind. If high
winds are present, note that in the JSA and what can be done to minimize the
risk.

5.1.1.5 Make sure the rig is willing to allow use of one of the rig personnel for
assistance up on the topdrive. This is a three person operation.
5.1.1.6 Make sure that the drilling operation is at a place where they can be stopped
for around 3.5 hours or more depending on if reassembly is required.
5.1.1.7 Complete the JSA for removal of the Backup Wrench (BUW).
5.1.1.8 Have the driller open the lower well control valve (LWCV) to make sure all
pressure is relieved from the mud line and the Kelly hose.
5.1.1.9 Have the driller run fresh water through the mud line to remove any caustics
or other toxic chemicals that may have been used in the drilling fluids.
5.1.1.10 Cover the rotary table opening with an appropriate cover before starting the
procedure if applicable.
5.1.1.11 Cover the drill pipe box with an appropriate cover before starting the
procedure if applicable.
5.1.1.12 Have the driller bring the topdrive down to floor level, ideally as low as the
driller can get it without setting on the stump or rotary table.

5.1.2 Install the Energy Isolation on the Topdrive CIP cabinet main breaker. Refer to
the HSE-FSR 300.10 Energy Isolation – Lockout Tagout Procedure.
