Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD Overview

1 Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD Overview

Identity: FAJ 121 4252

Licensing: Licensed feature. One license per
node.
Introduced in: DU Radio Node: L15B
Replaces: N/A
Belongs to: Carrier Aggregation, FAJ 801 0405

Summary

The Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature combines the best of FDD and
TDD spectrum. It allows DL traffic to be offloaded on the TDD spectrum
without being constrained by the limited UL application coverage of a TDD
carrier. Instead, a UE can be served by the larger range FDD UL while still
enjoying the substantial DL performance boost provided by the TDD carrier.

Figure 1 shows an over-the-air drive measurement and illustrates the

coverage extension of the TDD spectrum when combined with FDD in CA.
Note that the TDD spectrum provides a substantial DL performance
improvement, well beyond the traditional coverage point of a TDD carrier not
used in CA with FDD.

Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD

In sites where operators have access to both FDD and TDD spectra, the
Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature enables both spectrum resources to be
used. The use of both spectrum resources improves system performance and
end-user experience.

For more information about benefits of carrier aggregation, see Carrier

Aggregation.

Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD provides the following benefits:

• Extends TDD DL coverage and provides user data rate gains by using the
UL of FDD carriers. As UL HARQ feedback is sent on FDD carriers, TDD
HARQ bundling is not required.

• Increases user peak throughput by combining FDD and TDD data rates.

• Supports asymmetric traffic.

The Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature supports the following

characteristics:

• FDD-TDD 2CC DL CA, where the PCell is FDD and the SCell is TDD.

• FDD-TDD 3CC DL CA, where the PCell is FDD and the SCells can both
be TDD, or a mix of FDD and TDD.

• FDD-TDD CA is not available for Category 5 UEs with DL 4x4 MIMO

feature active on the ENodeB, regardless of the actual number of layers
used in the transmission.

• TDD cells configured with Transmission Modes (TM) 7, 8, and 9 are

overridden to TM3 when used as SCells.

• Dynamic switching between TM3 and TM4 is not available for SCells.

2 Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD

Dependencies

The Carrier Aggregation (CA) FDD-TDD feature allows TDD cells to be used
as Secondary Cells (SCell) for an FDD Primary Cell (PCell).

This feature requires the following RAN features to be active:

• FDD and TDD on Same eNodeB

• Carrier Aggregation

In addition, some or all of the following features can be required. This depends
on the desired number of SCell candidates, number of DUs within the
eNodeB, and the number of carriers to be aggregated:

• 3CC DL Carrier Aggregation Extension

• Dynamic SCell Selection for Carrier Aggregation

• DU Radio Node: Cross-DU Carrier Aggregation Support

• Inter-eNodeB Carrier Aggregation

This feature affects no other features.

Feature Operation

3 Feature Operation

This section describes the Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature in more

detail, including network configuration requirements and operation flows.

3.1 Network Requirements

This is a licensed feature. This means that for the feature to be operational, a
valid license key must be installed and the feature must be explicitly activated
by setting a MOM attribute.

The following must also be fulfilled before feature activation to be fully

operational:

• DU Radio Node, the DU must be either a DUS31 or DUS41.

• Baseband Radio Node, the baseband must be one of the following:

– Baseband 5212

– Baseband 5216

– Baseband 6303

– Baseband 6502

– Baseband 6620

– Baseband 6630

• A license key for feature FDD and TDD on Same eNodeB must be
activated.

• A license key for feature Cross-DU Carrier Aggregation Support must be

activated if PCell and SCells for FDD-TDD CA are spread across two
DUs.

• A license key for feature Inter-eNodeB Carrier Aggregation must be

activated if PCell and SCells are on different eNodeBs.

• Appropriate CA licensing must be in place to reflect the desired number of

SCell candidates and the number of aggregated carriers.

Network Impact

5 Network Impact

This section describes how the Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature impacts
the network functions and capabilities.

5.1 Coverage
This section provides information on the impact of the feature on network
coverage.

As a result of Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD using the FDD UL carrier for TDD
SCells, a significant coverage gain is experienced by TDD cells.

6 Associated Features and Affected

Functions

This section describes how the Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD feature affects
other features and functions.

6.1 Prerequisite Features

Table 1 lists prerequisite features to the Carrier Aggregation FDD-TDD
feature, that is, they must be active prior to introducing the Carrier Aggregation
FDD-TDD feature.

Table 1 Prerequisite Features

Feature Description
FDD and TDD on Same eNodeB The feature provides the capability to run traffic in both TDD
and FDD cells at the same time in the same eNodeB.
Carrier Aggregation The feature provides the capability to transmit data to a single
UE on two DL bands simultaneously.

In addition, some or all of the features listed in page 8 can be required,

depending on the desired number of SCell candidates and number of carriers
to be aggregated:

Table 2 Possible Prerequisites Features

Feature Description
3CC DL Carrier Aggregation The feature supports the capability to transmit data to a single
Extension UE on three carriers simultaneously.
Dynamic SCell Selection for Carrier The feature is based on the Carrier Aggregation feature and has
Aggregation the following additional functionality:

• A cell used as PCell can have multiple cells as SCell

candidates.

• Based on UE measurements and the SCell algorithm, the

SCell of a UE is dynamically configured or deconfigured.
Only in DU Radio Node. The feature allows carrier aggregation to be used with multi-DU
Cross-DU Carrier Aggregation eNodeB configurations where the primary and secondary cells
Support are terminated on different DUs. This can be used to support
carrier pooling deployments. Some carriers are terminated on
one DU and other carriers on a second DU in a multi-DU
configuration, without losing support for carrier aggregation.
Inter-eNodeB Carrier Aggregation The feature enables downlink carrier aggregation between cells
not located on the same eNodeB.

6.2 Affected Features

This feature affects no other feature.
