Q113. What is the aim of the tenth commandment?
A113. That not even the slightest desire or thought contrary
to any one of God’s commandments should ever arise in our
hearts. Rather, with all our hearts we should always hate sin
and take pleasure in whatever is right.
Q114. But can those converted to God
obey these commandments perfectly?
A114. No.
In this life even the holiest have only a small beginning of
this obedience. Nevertheless, with all seriousness of
purpose, they do begin to live according to all, not only some,
of God’s commandments.
Q115. Since no one in this life can obey the Ten
Commandments perfectly, why does God want them
preached so pointedly?
A115. First, so that the longer we live the more we may come
to know our sinfulness and the more eagerly look to Christ
for forgiveness of sins and righteousness.
Second, so that we may never stop striving, and never stop
praying to God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, to be renewed
more and more after God’s image, until after this life we
reach our goal: perfection.
CALL TO CONFESSION
“‘And you shall not covet your neighbour's wife. And you shall
not desire your neighbour's house, his field, or his male
servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or
anything that is your neighbour's.’
Deut 5:21
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lord, your Word tells us to refrain from coveting what does
not belong to us. The apostle Paul teaches us that coveting
is a form of idolatry, which is to elevate created things over
you our creator. Our first parents coveted the forbidden fruit
and they coveted the exalted wisdom and position of God.
We are just like them. We are prone to be dissatisfied with
our possessions, with our families, with our colleagues, with
our friends, with our bodies, with our selves, with our allotted
situations in life. We confess that we envy the situations of
others, and we grumble at the good that they enjoy. Lord, we
lack contentment! We need your grace, in order that we
might turn away from the idolatry of our covetous hearts.
Renew us by the power of your gracious Spirit and conform
us to the righteous image of Christ, all to the praise of your
glorious grace.
loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us,
not because of works done by us in righteousness, but
according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration
and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us
richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that being
justified by his grace we might become heirs according to
the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want
you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed
in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works.
These things are excellent and profitable for people. But avoid
foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels
about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a
person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then
twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a
person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless
before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons
through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to
the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us
in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood,
