The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was designed as a rapid screening instrument for mild
cognitive dysfunction. It assess different cognitive domains: attention and concentration,
executive functions, memory, language, visouconstructive abilities, conceptual thinking,
calculation and orientation. MoCA can be administer by anyone who understands and follows the
instructions, however, only a health professional with experience in the cognitive field can
interpret the results. The MoCA administration time is approximately 10 minutes. The total
possible score is 30 points; a score of 26 or above is considered normal.
Administration: The examiner instructs the following: “Please draw a line from a
number to a letter in ascending order. Start here [point to number (1)] and draw a
line to the letter A, then to the number 2, and so on. Ending here [point to the
letter (E)].”
Scoring: One point is allocated if the subject correctly draws the following pattern:
1-A-2-B-3-C-4-D-5-E, without drawing any crossing lines. Any error that is not self-
corrected immediately, before moving on to the Bed task, earns a score of 0. No
point will be allocated if the patient draws a line connecting the end (E) to the
beginning (1).
Administration: The examiner gives the following instructions pointing to the bed:
"Copy this drawing as accurately as you can"
