Medication Order
A medication order is written directions provided by a prescribing
practitioner for a specific medication to be administered to an individual.

Components of Medication Order

 Name of the patient/client  Dose, frequency, and route of

Kinds of Medication Order
ROUTINE ORDER
Detailed order for a medication given
on a routine or regularly scheduled
basis such as every morning at 10 AM
PRN ORDER
A prescription for medication to be
administered when necessary or as
needed based on the patient’s needs
STAT ORDER
A medication order which is
administered immediately and only
ONE TIME ORDER/SINGLE ORDER once
A written order for a medication to be
given once at a specific time.
Medical Safety

medication-use process.

Remember the three checks:


1) Name of the person
2) Strength and dosage
3) Frequency against the:
 Medical Order
 MAR and
 Medication Container
Verify any medication order and make sure it’s complete.
The order should include the following: drug name, dosage,
frequency and route of administration.

Check the patient's medical record for an allergy or


contraindication to the prescribed medication. If an allergy or
contraindications exist, don't administer the medication and
notify the practitioner.

Prepare medications for one patient at a time.

Educate patients about their medications.
