Course Description An introduction to energy and professional land management, including

technical and economic considerations in the search for and development of oil,
gas and other energy resources. There will be a focus on Crown and Freehold
mineral tenure matters.

Course Objectives By the end of this course, students will…

1. Describe the holistic and integrative roles and relationships that landmen and
commercial negotiators typically have within large energy companies.
2. Apply the functions of key company disciplines (geology, geophysics, reservoir
engineering, and land management).
3. Apply the CAPL Standard Operating Agreement to typical inter-company
mineral leases, farmouts, farmins, and external relationships.
4. Apply the basic concepts of tenure law and regulation, including an

understanding of Crown and Freehold mineral leases.

Textbook and/or Other It is highly recommended that students purchase the PLMA 475 course
Materials binder (“textbook”) which is available for approximately $100.

Please pick up the course binder from Admin Assistant in (SH 435). Payment is
by debit or credit card only. The fee allows students use of the materials, but
does not convey ownership nor flexibility in distribution to other people.

The following will also be provided as part of the student purchase of PLMA 475
materials:

Pedagogy This course will primarily utilize discussion on the pre-assigned readings. There
will be some use of guest speakers.

Grade Scale The Haskayne School of Business endeavours to ensure consistency of final
grades across courses and sections. Variations in distribution will always be
considered by the instructor where called for by the performance in each
individual class. The student does not have any ‘right’ to a certain grade, but is
responsible for earning grades. The instructor has unfettered discretion to
evaluate student performance and assign all grades.

Additional Course 1. The exams will focus primarily on the application of what is learned in the
Details classroom, as well as all areas of the assigned readings and target questions.
There will be cases in which multiple possible alternatives should be stated
and evaluated, along with a decision to "shoot the puck", coupled with logic
and rationale.

2. The exams may include some questions which are identical to those covered
in class unannounced quizzes. However, the majority of the problems and
questions on the exams will be on situations that are similar to class
problems or have a "twist", much like the circumstances which landmen and
commercial negotiators find on the job. Thus, some creativity and critical
thinking is required to write excellent exams.

3. The Haskayne School of Business endeavours to ensure consistency of final

grades across courses and sections. Variations in distribution will always be
considered by the instructor where called for by the performance in each
individual class. The student does not have any "right" to a certain grade,
but is responsible for earning the grades. The student is also encouraged to
consult the University Calendar for general grades policy.

4. A grade of D or higher for every component of this course is needed in

order to pass this course.

Missed Assessment Students must follow the guidelines outlined in Part B of the outline to request a
Policy deferral for missed work during the term, including quizzes, assignments, and
exams. The assigned deferral dates for specific assessments are detailed below.
None assigned, to be scheduled with instructor

Late Policy At the discretion of the instructor, late assignments will be subject to a penalty
of 10% per full or partial day, including weekends and holidays. Note that an
assignment submitted five or more days after the due date will be assigned a
grade of 0%.

Class Participation Class participation is based on student interaction in class with the instructors

and other students. An "A" in class participation is earned through preparation
and excellent classroom "wisdom" for answers and questions. Students who do
not "speak up" or who do not ask questions in class cannot expect to receive a
very good grade for just "showing up". While rare, students could receive a
failing mark (F) for consistent lack of preparation or for disruptive class
interaction. In such cases, students will first receive a warning from the
instructors.
A peer evaluation will be required from each student for the group project in
Group Project
order to evaluate whether each individual should receive the same grade as the
group.
The instructors will utilize peer evaluation forms received by an individual
student’s group members in the determination of each individual’s grade for the
group components. The peer evaluation form is the last page of this course
outline.

Midterm Exam One mid-term exam will be given on October 6, 2020.

Final Exam The final exam will be comprehensive, but will focus largely on the post midterm
materials.

Assessment of Writing Writing skills are not exclusive to English courses and, in fact, should cross all
disciplines. The University supports the belief that throughout their University
careers, students should be taught how to write well so that when they
graduate their writing abilities will be far above the minimal standards required
at entrance. Consistent with this belief, students are expected to do a
substantial amount of writing in their University courses and, where
appropriate, members of faculty can and should use writing and the grading
thereof as a factor in the evaluation of student work. The services provided by
the Writing Support, part of the Student Success Centre, can be accessed by all
undergraduate and graduate students who feel they require further assistance.
In this course, your writing will be assessed as part of your grade in the following
assessments: industry projects, group assignments, midterm exam, and final
exam.

Tutorials The tutorial will provide an introduction to Land, GIS and Databases (Accumap,
GeoScout & CS Explorer) and include submitting reports, queries and mapping.
There will be a group project on a relevant topic. Students are expected to
attend all tutorial sessions in both the classroom and computer lab.

Email Communication Please specify the course name and section number in the subject line of all
emails (PLMA 475 Lecture 01). I will not respond to emails that do not contain
this information.
Although email is commonly used by students to communicate with their
instructors, it does limit the effectiveness of communication and may not be the
best way for me to answer student questions. If I feel that communicating via
email is not optimal, I may request a telephone call or personal meeting.

PLMA 475, Fall 2020 -- PEER EVALUATION

Les Burden, George Eynon, Paul Negenman, Bruce Cameron

PURPOSE: To assist lecturers in determining the "team component" of each individual’s grade
as fairly as possible.

ASSUMPTION: When a member, has in total, contributed to the overall work of the team about
the average as the average team member, he/she should receive 100% of the
"overall team grade" for the team component of the course.

When a member has contributed more than the average to the work of the team
(eg. analytical, organizational, written, investigative, verbal) he/she should receive
more than 100% of the team grade (eg. 110%, 120%, etc.)

Similarly, when a member has contributed less than average, he/she should receive less
than 100% of the team grade (eg. 90%, 80%, etc.)

NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY THAT THE GROUP AVERAGE 100% FOR THE PEER
EVALUATIONS. THUS, ONE STUDENT MIGHT DESERVE 115% AND THE OTHERS
DESERVE 100%.

INSTRUCTIONS: Please list below the members of your team and indicate what percentage of
the team grade you would recommend each other member receive.
