TEACHING – LEARNING ACTIVITIES (TLAs)

Activity 2. Try Me

1. State arguments for and against the following statement:

There are other things more valuable in an organization besides people who work there.

- I would not say that there are other things more valuable in an organization besides people. In my opinion,
people are the most valuable resource an organization can have because even though technology has
advanced drastically, it still can't do all the job by itself. People are needed in order to keep a company
running and growing. They are the most valuable asset an organization may have and, therefore, should not be
looked as a machine, but as a human who can contribute to the company.

2. Of the seven tasks an HR manager does, which do you think is the most challenging? Why?

- In my opinion, the most challenging task an HR manager does is to train and develop people, because people
are more and more lazy each passing day. They want to work less and get a better salary. Therefore, keeping
people motivated to train and develop themselves is the most challenging task an HR manager can handle.

Activity 3. Expectation

1. What are your perceptions of what an HR manager does on a day-to-day basis? Research this job Title and
describe your findings.

- The basic functions of HR manager are to support the business to deliver people-related processes, vision and
strategy across the company, aligned with the law. HR managers also support other colleagues within the
business to resolve challenging issues related to the employment and dismissal of staff. This involves scouting
prospective candidates, coordinating interviews with qualified applicants, and establishing an onboarding
process for new hires. Payroll and benefits. Human resource managers supervise the payroll department to
ensure payments and benefits programs are processed correctly.

2. Is this the type of job you expected? Why?

- It is the job I expected, because as I knew already some work loads of a staff in HR department it didn’t shock
me how busy and devastating their job is.

Activity 4. Challenge

1. Research the various generations: baby boomers, generation X and the Y Generation (millennials). Compare and
Contrast five differences between the generations.

- Baby Boomers: Baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. They're currently between 57-75 years old
 Media Consumption: Baby boomers are the biggest consumers of traditional media like television, radio,
magazines, and newspaper. Despite being so traditional, 90% of baby boomers have a Facebook account. This
generation has begun to adopt more technology in order to stay in touch with family members and reconnect with
old friends.
 Banking Habits: Boomers prefer to go into a branch to perform transactions. This generational cohort still prefers
to use cash, especially for purchases under $5.

- Gen X: Gen X was born between 1965 and 1979/80 and is currently between 41-56 years old
 Media Consumption: Gen X still reads newspapers, magazines, listens to the radio, and watches TV (about 165
hours' worth of TV a month). However, they are also digitally savvy and spend roughly 7 hours a week on
Facebook (the highest of any generational cohort).
 Banking Habits: Since they are digitally savvy, Gen X will do some research and financial management online,
but still prefer to do transactions in person. They believe banking is a person-to-person business and demonstrate
brand loyalty.

- Gen Y: Gen Y, or Millennials, were born between 1981 and 1994/6. They are currently between 25 and 40
years old
 Media Consumption: 95% still watch TV, but Netflix edges out traditional cable as the preferred provider. Cord-
cutting in favor of streaming services is the popular choice. This generation is extremely comfortable with mobile
devices, but 32% will still use a computer for purchases. They typically have multiple social media accounts.
 Banking Habits: Millennials have less brand loyalty than previous generations. They prefer to shop product and
features first, and have little patience for inefficient or poor service. Because of this, Millennials place their trust
in brands with superior product history such as Apple and Google. They seek digital tools to help manage their
debt and see their banks as transactional as opposed to relational.

2. How might these differences impact HRM?

- Although generational conflict is often seen as larger social issues, they play out every day on the team level
in the workplace in ways that hinder productivity and lead to frustration, conflict, and poor morale.
- Generational differences, relative to how people communicate, might affect misunderstandings, high
employee turnover, difficulty in attracting employees, and gaining employee commitment. Today, running a
business involves dealing with many kinds of people and age groups.
- With each generation having such distinctive traits and characteristics, there is a potential risk of conflicts
occurring due to clashing values and beliefs, work ethics, and communication styles. Interpersonal issues are
often one of the biggest problems that employers face when dealing with generational diversity.

ASSESSMENT TASKS (ATs)

Activity 5. Cases and Problem (Changes, Changes)

Jennifer, the owner and manager of a company with ten employees, has hired you to take over the HRM function
so she can focus on other areas of her business. During your first two weeks, you find out that the company has been
greatly affected by the up economy and is expected to experience overall revenue growth by 10 percent over the next
three years, with some quarters seeing growth as high as 30 percent. However, five of the ten workers are expected to
retire within three years. These workers have been with the organization since the beginning and provide a unique
historical perspective of the company. The other five workers are of diverse ages.

In addition to these changes, Jennifer believes they may be able to save costs by allowing employees to
telecommute one to two days per week. She has some concerns about productivity if she allows employees to work from
home. Despite these concerns, Jennifer has even considered closing down the physical office and making her company a
virtual organization, but she wonders how such a major change will affect the ability to communicate and worker
motivation. Jennifer shares with you her thoughts about the costs of health care on the organization. She has considered
cutting benefits entirely and having her employees work for her on a contract basis, instead of being full-time employees.
She isn’t sure if this would be a good choice. Jennifer schedules a meeting with you to discuss some of her thoughts.

To prepare for the meeting, you perform research so you can impress your new boss with recommendations on the
challenges presented.

Questions and Answers:

1. Point out which changes are occurring in the business that affect HRM.
- The organizations may get affected by some external environment factors which may limit the organization
ability to function well. So, the management should keep monitoring and watching these external factors all
the times. One of these external environment factors is the economy; the entity must monitor the economy
efficiently and learn how to react to it. The changes in economic could affect the organization decision
making related to HRM as the following: recruiting, benefits and compensation, training & development,
downsizing, employees’ contract, and money will spend on the business growth. In this case, the company is
facing 10% revenue growth which may need to hire more employees to meet the need and want of our
customers. Human resources also should be aware of the change in the aging workforce. As we have in this
case five employees are going to retire, and then the HR management has to think about the organization
retirement plan and the training program to prepare the youth labor to replace the older workers with the
required skills. Workplace diversity is one of the changes which may affect human resource management,
and it refers to the variety and differences between the employees. Diversity includes the race, gender, ethnic
group, age, and personality. In this case, we have age diversity, and the management should be ready to meet
the benefits need of each employee.

2. What are some considerations the company and HR should be aware of when making changes related to this case
study?

- The company and HR should be aware of some considerations when making changes such as:
1) The organization objectives: any implementing changes should help in achieving the organization goals.
2) The labor law of the country: ensuring that HR policies and practices are fitting to the state laws.
3) Telecommuting Allows employees to work from home or a remote location for a specified period of time,
such as one day per week.: is allowing the employee to work from home for a period of time, and then
HRM has to be aware of its issues to it can develop policies to meet the company and the employee’s
needs.

4) Communicate the change: Transparency and strong communication about the change in the business
goals with the employees would enhance their productivity, decrease the turnover, and increase their
loyalty.
5) Designing motivated work: HRM should create work that attracts, satisfy, and motivate employees to
attain the organization objectives.
6) Alternative work arrangement: HRM should be aware of the benefits of these flexible contract such as
virtual terms.
7) Health-Care Insurance: is became mandatory nowadays and it is part of the employee’s benefits.
8) Changes must be implemented slowly not all the sudden.

3. What would the initial steps be to start planning for these changes?

- Set clear business goals at a given time and make sure to communicate it to the employees to attain and
achieve the organization goals and objectives.
- Create the future action plan, and then management could know the targets of each employee.
- Assess the current organizations’ strategic HR planning, identify department’s current staff knowledge, skills,
and evaluate their strengths and their training need.
- Know all possible alternatives that may help to attain those goals.
- Analyze all potential costs and benefits.

4. What would your role be in implementing these changes? What would Jennifer’s role be?

STUDENT REFLECTION
Think of your current skills. Are there personal or professional skills you would like to work on?

Personal Skill: Cooking

Cooking will help you understand world cultures, customs and flavors. You will also learn life skills like eating
healthy, budgeting your money, and cleaning. Save some cash. Spending money on pre-packaged meals gets too
expensive for a young person and families on a budget.

Cooking is one of the most important skills a person can have. When you cook for yourself you learn to enjoy
healthy foods that you’ve always hated. For example, since getting a job as a cook, I’ve learned to like tomatoes,
mushrooms and squash. My roommate has learned to like green beans. If you know how to cook, you won’t go hungry.
My job is cooking for girls two years older than me. It’s so satisfying knowing that I have a life skill and that at the end of
the day I’ve done something productive.

Therefore, I like to work on this skill which is cooking. Not just for myself but also for my family’s future.
