ASSIGNMENT 2 (a) (GROUP):


REPORT ON NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (NPD) (35%)

OVERVIEW

The New Product Development (NPD) consists of the activities carried out by firms or entrepreneurs
when developing and launching new products. A new product that is introduced on the market
evolves over a sequence of stages, beginning with an initial product concept or idea that is
evaluated, developed, tested and launched on the market (Boonz, Allen & Hamilton, 1982).

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This is a GROUP project and the students are required to form groups comprising of 4/5
MEMBERS ONLY.
2. Each group needs to identify and develop product/service idea for a technology based solution
using NPD process. Student may choose the idea of the project/assignment from individual
case study or propose a new product/service idea.
3. Each group needs to write a final report using the given format.
4. Use Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11 with 1.5 spacing for writing blueprint report.
5. Submission of the report will be given in the task assigned. Failure to do so will jeopardize the
student’s grade for this subject. Penalty will be imposed for the delay of submission.

Guidelines for Contents


Following is a suggested guideline for preparing your case study reports (remember to always use Harvard
Business Style for all formatting and referencing as per the course outline):

Cover Page
 Innovation Product/Service Name
 Student Details (Name, Student ID, Programme and Group)
 Lecturer Name
 Submission Date

Table of Content (very clear, no further explanation is required)

Executive Summary
The Executive Summary should highlight the important points of the report such as:
 The name of the innovation and the innovation itself
 The purpose of the innovation
 The target market
 How the idea was derived

It should be written last to focus on key points/findings.

1.0 Introduction
 Start with your problem statement/issue that made you initiate the new product development. For
example, the covid-19 pandemic is a world issue (insert statistics here) therefore you would like to
create a rapid, efficient and cost effective covid-19 test kit. Then explain on your methodology , how
do you collect data (who, where, when and how) to refine your idea, limitations and so on.

2.1 New Product Development


2.2 Definition
Give the definition of your product. This is based on how you, as the innovator, define your
proposed innovations. The definition is unique to your innovation .

2.3 Classification of NPD


There are few types/category of NPD, identify which one is yours. It is available in ENT600 Text
book (Chapter 5: NPD)

2.4 New Product Development Process


2.4.1 Research & Development
The R&D process done for the ideation stage through:
 Idea generation (share the ideas that you generated - at least 3)
 Idea Screening (from the ideas that you generated, select one that you chose to
develop. explain why)
 Market Survey (Do a market survey to understand better does your idea have
commercialization value, for example there are 1.5mil covid19 cases in the world world
and it is expected to increase...show how strong is your market value and why people
need your product)
 Highlights also your description of technology of your product/service idea.

2.4.2 Product Design/Features & Technology Used
 Talk about product dimensions together with the design of the product and its
architecture (physical design), artistic design (aesthetics) as well as the required
parameters to satisfy the market needs.

2.4.3 Concept Testing


 In concept testing, this is how you communicate (verbal description, Sketch, Rendering
- available in ENT600 Text book (Chapter 5: NPD)

2.4.4 Build Prototype (2D or 3D)


It is best to develop a functional prototype. However, for classrooms purposes, it is
sufficient to develop a non-functional/non-working prototope or a 2D/3D drawing or a
process flow to represent the look of the actual product.

2.4.5 Test Marketing


Do a simple questionnaire to your target market to understand better about their
acceptance of your product. For example :are they satisfied with your product features or
they want more? etc...) How many respondents are enough? Due to MCO, 30 is enough...

3. Conclusion
Based on the NPD analysis, make a conclusion on about the feasibility and viability of the
product/services for commercialization. Give reason why you think so.

Make sure all references are cited correctly. Recommend that you source interviews, business journals,
periodicals, and textual references as well as some online research. Make sure you support your ideas with
facts and figures. Please try to use your own words and ideas based on research rather than copy and paste
other’s words from the internet.

Attach any original data that relate to the study, but which would have interrupted the flow of the main body.
All charts, financials, visuals, and other related items can be placed here and referenced in the report.
