"THE ANALYSIS OF CAMEL DRIVER’S CHARACTER IN THE ALCHEMIST

NOVEL BY PAULO COELHO”

Novel was known as Literature's part which can be defined as one of the artwork formed
in a story with any elements which can support the novel itself, such as : Theme, Character or
Characterization, Plot ,Settings, Point of view, and also Style and Tone. All of them are very
related to each other in elements to give contribution towards the story . One of the important
element is character, an author make a character based on their rules in the story , they write
characters development such as : protagonist character, antagonist, dynamic character, flat
character or even round character in the story ,they performing important part in the story to be
able present as great artwork, an author presence the character explicitly or even implicitly, its
depend on their creativity in creative writing. Characterization in the novel is quite important in a
story , how the character is introduced in the story performs a major character or even minor
characters. Major characterization includes protagonist, antagonist or other characters who bring
such a big impact or influence the way of the story performed. On the other hand there is a
minor character who supports the story as well even not influencing the main character
significantly, but the minor character also as part of characterization and it's important as well in
the novel to provide a rich variety of story and colorfully.

The Alchemist as one of the greatest fiction novels by Paulo Coelho is one of the well-
known novel because the story tells about a man's journey who follows his belief and dream to
find his hidden treasure. The main characters are a man named Santiago, Fatima, The Old Man,
Crystal merchant, English man and the Alchemist. The minor characters in the story are : Young
man, Camel driver, Chieftain, Desert, Wind, Sun , Heaven and another supporting character in a
novel. The reason prefer Camel driver's character to analyse rather than others character is
because as Minor character his Utterance contribution is very limited in the story but adequately
sending a moral lesson to another character from his point of view as Camel Driver's. As a minor
character in the story he also can engage with the main character and present his or her own rules
in the story by sharing his Idea and perspective of life. Character of Camel driver escorting the
English man and Santiago at desert also other characters. Author presents the character of Camel
driver in an implicitly or indirect way, because the author described him not explained in the
story directly or also not strictly to the point, instead of that author making his character by
conversational or utterance when they are having conversation with another character which is
very limited. The author tries to elaborate the camel driver’s character from his utterances to
another character to engage with another character. The utterance by the Camel driver such as :

Data 1 : "The desert fills man’s hearts with visions,” the camel driver answered (conversation
happened when Camel Driver talked to The boy) .

Data 2 : "when the people consult me,it is not that I’m reading the future; I am guessing at the
future. The future belongs to the god, and it's only he who reveals it, under extraordinary
circumstances. How do I guess the future? Based on the omens of the present, the secret is here
in the present,if you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And if you improve
the present , what comes later will also be better. Forget about the future and live each day
according to the teachings,confident that God loves his children '' Camel Driver said to Santiago.

Data 3 : “Only when he, himself, reveals it. And God only rarely reveals the future. When he
does so, it is for only one reason: it’s a future that was written so as to be altered.” God had
shown the boy a part of the future, the camel driver thought.

From those statements we can imply that the author presents the Camel driver’s character from
how he does conversation with Santiago. When Camel driver talk to Santiago at caravan about
his experience in life and how he and his families coping the situation also obstacle and lot of
problems to them, about something could come and gone because of universe and he also stated
that by those problem, camel driver and his family know about God’s word to them. Camel
drivers also tell Santiago about important things that as humans, we don’t have to be scared
about the present time. If they can get what they want they can also lose it such as important
things, lands, even our life as well. Some action of Camel driver to Santiago already proves that
he has good attitude and action by giving support and wise advice to Santiago, very respect even
with the people he knows in the very beginning, its mean Camel driver is an open minded
person, kind and obedient with his religion, we can analyse when several of his utterance
mentioning about God’s name, God's power Includes how the way of God showing his blessing
for camel driver’s life until present time. In the conversation between the Camel driver to
Santiago, he is kind of a good personality with positive thoughts, open minded and willing to
help. It’s seen when He gives any information about caravan, desert, how to survive and about
his journey which can be a lesson for Santiago and it could be as guidelines for Santiago from his
experience previously. Camel driver character based on the analysis is a type of ‘Round
character’, it can be defined as a type of character which is a well-developed and complex figure
of the story, they are more realistic and demonstrated and have more depth in their personalities.
They can make surprising or puzzling decisions and attack the reader’s attention . The analysis
which showing him as round character when he surprising the reader with his decision in do
action in change his job to be a camel driver to survive when he and his family are facing hard
situation and disaster previously because he more realistic to do action for family betterment
when suffering in hard situation such as earthquake happen and Nile river was overflow and As
result hard financial and life condition, but Camel driver only believe one thing , everything
happen under God power and as human we just follow the flow which have been written to us as
human being , so from those analysis we can concluded that he is good personalities,wise and
has obedient heart to God and type of his character is Round character.
Contribution of Camel driver’s character is exist to the main character which are to Santiago
and the Alchemist,such as his present help the Santiago to be better personalities and more
realistic in order to accept all condition even its hard one by telling his experiences in life and he
can share his point of view which can be moral lesson, also Camel driver include in Santiago
journey meanwhile he only as minor character in the novel , we can see how Camel driver help
them to pass through the desert by caravan and help to protect Santiago also English man from
dangerous situation of villain Who wants to seizing Santiago's property. Also in the story Camel
driver is able to relate to the story because of his job in a caravan to guide the people who want
to pass through the desert by using camels and also part of the universe’s destiny in the
Alchemist story.

As conclusion, minor character in the Novel is not making a significant influence for the
whole story and for the main characters, but it can be part of the story and still related to the
story, although they only present as minor characters as the part of the story to extend and
prolong the story to make them rich of variation to appealing the reader's attention in reading the
whole story. Same as Camel Driver's characterization in the story taught a lesson for Santiago to
help him as guidelines while surviving and struggling in a wild desert situation, to protect
Santiago by his suggestion, point of view include his experience in life which can be a moral
lesson in the future when Main characters have obstacles and challenges .
