2. How are the mangrove forests important?

Answer: Mangrove forests are important because they form a barrier and
protect the coastal areas from sea storms and tsunamis.

3. List the steps taken by the government to conserve the forests and wildlife.
Answer: The government has taken initiatives to conserve the forests and
wildlife. Some of the steps taken are:

• Declaration of many areas as reserved for forests, also called as wildlife


sanctuaries and national parks.
• Prohibition of hunting of animals and cutting of trees.
4. Write any two features of the festival ‘Vanmahotsav’ celebrated in India.

Answer: Two features of the festival ‘Vanmahotsav’ are:

• It is celebrated at the beginning of the rainy season.


• People plant saplings of trees during this season.

5. Why are forests called as the lungs of the Earth?

Answer: Trees in the forests help in purifying the air that all the living organisms
need to breathe. They absorb the carbon dioxide and give out oxygen and hence
are called as the lungs of the Earth.
