1. List any five uses of forests.
Ans: Forests purify the air, are a source of medicinal herbs, fuel wood,
rubber, gum and lac. They also check soil erosion. They give shelter and
food to animals and timber for paper and furniture.
2. Differentiate between evergreen and deciduous forests.
Ans: Evergreen forests never shed their leave? at the same time and appear
green throughout the year. Deciduous forests shed their leaves at the
beginning of the summer season to reduce water loss due to evaporation.
3. Why do you think forests should be conserved?
Ans: Forests should be conserved because they are very useful to humans
and animals. They are being cleared at an alarming rate.
4. Write short notes on:
a) thorn forests: The trees of these forests have long roots, small leaves,
thick barks and sharp thorns. These trees need very little water to survive.
They are found in dry areas like Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Important
trees are babul, kikar, date and palm.
b) montane forests: There are tall trees with needle shaped leaves. The
trees are conical shaped. They are found in the Himalayan region and the
Nilgiri hills. The important trees are pine, spruce, cedar and deodar.
c) tidal forests: The trees grown here can survive both in the freshwater of
the rivers and the salty water of the seas. They are found in the delta of the
river Ganga and Brahmaputra. The important tree of the forests is sundari.
5. Discuss some steps taken by the government to conserve forests and
wildlife.
Ans: Many steps have been taken by the government to conserve wildlife.
Hunting is made illegal by law. Many national parks have been established.
Here, hunting, fishing, mining are not allowed. Wildlife sanctuaries have
been established. Killing or harming any animal is strictly not allowed.
