A mobile crane is designed with the principles of momentum (lever) and balance in mind. Simply
put, a crane must be able to lift loads, through the use of the lever principle, while maintaining its
balance.

Before we delve into these concepts, we need to talk about the force of gravity. We know from
Newton and Einstein that the natural phenomenon of gravity is present. Well, if there's any doubt
about that, just let a 1” shackle drop from a height of 1.0 m at your foot, and you'll quickly prove it's
there. In lifting loads, the position of the Center of Gravity (or CG) of a load is critical to the success
of the operation. The “o symbol of the center of gravity” in the illustrations below is used to show
where the CG of an object is located. The CG of any object is considered to be the point on the
object where the weight is evenly distributed. Also the CG is considered the point where the entire
mass of the body is concentrated there.

stable balance

Now, let's imagine a seesaw (we'll see later that this is exactly how a crane works). The seesaw
remains in balance as long as the momentum provided by the two weights A and B is equal. If the
weights placed on the seesaw were different, it would tilt towards the heavier side, given that the
distances between the loads and the support point are equal. If we increase the weight of side A,
the only way to maintain balance is to move the fulcrum closer to the heaviest object, as shown
below. By moving the stand, each counterweight balances the other and the seesaw remains in
balance.

Balancing depends on the moment exerted by each load. Moment is the result of multiplying the
weight of an object by the distance the object is from the support point. In the illustration below,
the 200 kg load is multiplied by the distance the load is from the support point (1.5 m). The 100 kg
weight is multiplied by its distance from the support (3.0 m). If both sides of the equation are
equal, the system remains in equilibrium. The math is pretty simple. You multiply the 200 kg times
1.5 m, which equals 300 kg.m. Then multiply the weight by 100 kg times your distance from the
stand. The result of 300 kgm shows that the moments are equal, or that the leverage caused by the
loads on both sides is equal.

We can apply this concept to the cranes, so that, in the illustration below, the right of the support is
raised, similar to the boom of a crane. As long as the moment or leverage exerted by each load
remains the same, the system will remain in balance

Now let's see what happens when, instead of the load being supported, it is suspended below its
support point, as in the jib of a crane. From the figure below, we can see that the system remains in
balance, as long as the moments remain equal, only the line of application of the weight forces
matters. This example is great as long as there is no configuration change, neither load nor
distance; but we know that, in crane work, this does not happen: the work is dynamic. We lift
various types of loads with variable weights, change the distance, raising/lowering the boom or
extending/retracting the telehandler. Furthermore, this type of balance, in which the two sides are
equal, is called unstable equilibrium, where any variation, however small, including even a small
gust of wind,

These examples show how balance is defined. We know that a crane must be able to maintain
itself in balance under a variety of load changes, radius changes and other factors that influence
balance. In the field, we think of balance as “stability” – and a crane's ability to stay stable and do
its job safely is the ultimate goal.
